Reading the reality tv thread I got to thinking about how far Samantha Mumba has fallen - wasn’t she about to break Hollywood? Anyway then I remembered the musical intro she did for a John Duddy fight back in October and the cringeworthy lip-synching to a Duddy song that she put herself through. Class bit at the start when she loses the top of the mike.
Just as good, or even better, is Red Hurley who was up next in the ring. The great man was given the task of singing our national anthem but it’s a pity they didn’t ask someone who knew the words. I think I’ve captured the words he sang below the video.
The Irish National Anthem should never be preformed by celebrities of any kind, the music is enough, and the crowd will supply the lyrics. 35,000 people singing Amhrn na bhFiann before Irish internationals in Lansdowne Road was a truly memorable experience, no need for a fooking gimp with a mike on the pitch butchering Irish pride!
The world is full of artists who adapt old classics into their own vernacular or style. Red took an outdated song and made it street. Both Siamsa and f ghall make perfect sense and might be even better than the real thing.
Now let him have a bash at Ireland’s call.
