Woeful Journalism

Herald.ie and The Leitrim Observer have both used a stock image of a Scottish lifeboat (with the flag clearly waving on the back) for their story about the rescue off Wexford today. Lazy.

Last night’s Herald:

John Waters predictably rehashing the thoughts of Anne Harris http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2012/0217/1224311917525.html

Apparently ESPN are in a spot of bother after leading a story on Jermey Lin, the NBA’s first american born player of Chinese descent, with the headline “Chink in the Armor”

FFS :shakefist:

Do posters here not even take the time to read others posts anymore?

whats the issue here Mac

The photo is of Kian Egan of Westlife, and not Cian Healy the Rugby player

FFS…

I know mate, it’s the Herald, what would you expect?

Heggeld readers wouldn’t know the difference.

Have the Hedild and Dublin GGA sorted out their differences?

Just clicked onto independent.ie there for the first time in a long long time and while I know they’ve always tended towards the tabloid they look like they’re investing in trying to replicate the Daily Mail model for websites with an odd blend of celebs, weird “humorous stories” and then a small bit of moral outrage.

The front page of the independent online features the following headlines, all included in their top stories among that body found in Kerry and the latest on the Frontline tweet controversy.

I love the fact that “journalists” Brian O’Reilly and Patrick Flynn have to put their names to the last two pieces. As if it wasn’t demeaning enough to write that shit anonymously, it’s now part of their “journalism” portfolio.

Since Noirin Hegarty was introduced as Online Editor around this time last year they’ve been edging ever closer to being a copy of the Daily Mail Online all for the sake of page impressions.

Granted this is probably the same as the print edition. Rather than concentrate on correct SEO methods and higher standards of journalism they’ve resorted to putting up as many headlines about ‘celebs’ in a bid to increase readership.

The amount of mistakes in the copy has increased dramatically since she took over as well.

I don’t understand the clamour for page impressions - they’ll never rival a newspaper with an international reach and I don’t think page impressions in an Irish market are going to do much to persuade advertisers. I thought the print edition was bad but this is awful stuff altogether.

It’s all about page impressions and unique users when it comes to the Digital Advertising agencies. Also they have Google ads running on their pages so the more impressions and unique users the higher the number of clicks on the adverts that will convert in advertising revenue and make the digital editions a more viable entity.

I agree with you though Rocko. The Indo and the Daily Mail are concentrating on the online editions and sites to make money presently as opposed to coming up with a viable eventual replacement for the print editions. Storyful and The Journal are where the future probably lies when advertisers finally ditch ‘traditional’ media.

Rocko is well aware of the benefits of digital marketing as he lazes in his Portmarnock mansion paid for solely from all the advertising revenue generated by the TFK brand.
