Woeful Journalism
The Irish Times and RTÉ have had a magnificent contest all weekend, battling to live blog the election counts in painfully humourless and youthful sounding tones.

Here’s an example from the Irish Times this morning, featuring a reference to a tv show for added youth appeal, ignoring any attempt to even link the tv show to an election and including the words “season finale episode” just to betray the fact that the writer doesn’t actully watch many season finales. Oh and that last inverted commas below - that’s there for no apparent reason.

Dublin’s European Race. It’s become better than a season finale episode of Game of Thrones (will Eamon Ryan pull through? Will Brian Hayes survive?). "
And virtually impossible to find details of a count on either.

Also ignorant that the major plot twists in GoT normally come in the penultimate episode.

That’s the point I was going to make when I originally started to type but I got sidetracked and forgot to mention it. Appalling coverage on the actual counts, they’ve decided copying and pasting tweets from nobodies is more informative.

David Kelly’s beginning to his Irish Independent piece on Ireland’s loss last night is woeful:

“Ireland wore green shorts and were hoping for green shoots. Green is also the colour of envy; as many of their international relations are planning for the sport’s ultimate carnival, Ireland have had Georgia on their minds for some time now.”

By the way, that thing you sent me the other day was fascinating, thanks.

You can thank @Juhniallio for that.

Thanks @Juhniallio

You’re very welcome, Fagan.

Kimmage has had a right cut at the Indo sub-eds on twitter. Looks like they only have a portion of his Joe Namath article up and makes no sense.

Aye, I was wondering why it was so short. The only interview bits by Kimmage were from a previous interview. Then it ended.

There was a bizarre segment on page 4 of yesterdays indo (picked it up in a hotel lobby), about what Sinn Feinns Eoin O’Broin and his wife had for lunch recently.
They seem to have just taken a photo the couple posted on twitter then built a little story about how they were living the high life around it.

Eoin O’Broin isn’t married, his girlfriend is Lynn Boylan MEP. He’s a smart cookie though. Has written a couple of books and is a SF strategist. He destroyed FG and Labour on Vincent Browne.

Poor sub-editing thread might have been more appropriate, pal?

They’re the same school of thought really.

Can someone explain the point of this story to me?

Gardai alert after suspected attempted abduction of infant from hospital

Staff at the Rainbow Ward became suspicious after two women requested permission to take the baby from the children’s ward.

Hospital security personnel was alerted and the local gardaí were contacted.

It’s understood the women had been playing with the baby at around 10.30am and then asked if they could bring the infant for a walk.

Gardaí from Roxboro Garda Station made contact with the baby’s mother.

A garda spokesman said the mother informed them she was aware that two friends were calling to see her baby.

Gardai were also in contact with social workers about the incident.

“Staff became suspicious after two unknown females who were playing with the baby asked if they could take the child for a walk. We contacted the mother who said she was aware that two friends had been out visiting her baby, Nothing untoward happened, but we will be keeping an eye on it,” said the spokesman.

When contacted a spokesperson for the HSE said UL Hospital has robust security systems in place to ensure the safety of all patients including babies.

"Anytime there is a security breach or attempted security breach the HSE will contact an Garda Siochana who undertake an investigation, " read the statement.

“There was no abduction of any child receiving care in any UL Hospital. UL Hospitals does not comment on individual patients or their care,” the statement concluded.
