World Cup Round of 32 Thread

4mins appears to be standard mode of operation here for every game

Take that ye cunts.

Wigan legend Jean Beausejour with the clincher.:clap::clap:

A black Chilean, ffs sake

I love Chile!!

Useless Aussie cunts…

Fine finish by Beausejour, great to see the return of air horns and firecrackers to World Cup Football

15 goals in 4 games, great entertainment so far

The knockout always decide whether a World Cup is great or not, and there hasn’t been a great one since 1986. Good start to the tournament, though.

USA 94 had elements of that, some great quarter finals, but it was overshadowed by an awful final

I would say that 2006 was a very fine edition, some cracking games:
Germany v Italy
Germany v Argentina
England v Portugal
France v Spain
Argentina v Mexico
Croatia v Australia
Sweden v England
Germany v Costa Rica

Also there were very few bad games, I only recall Italy v Ukraine and England v Ecuador being particularly bad in the knockouts

Awful finals have become a regular occurrence in the World Cup since '86, with '98 & '06 being the only exceptions.

I was travelling last evening, 7pm to 1am Irish.

Will the Spain Holland game be referred to in 20years time as one of those games that define a tournament?

Suarez out of Costa Rica game.

2006 probably looks good in relative terms because 2002 and 2010 were such awful tournaments. It had some good moments but was by no means a classic tournament - the final was pretty crap and most knockout games were poor. The finishes to the Italy-Germany and Italy-Australia matches were memorable though.

1994 and 1998 were better tournaments but neither won by great teams. The 1998 final again looks good only in relative terms because all finals since 1986 have been disappointing - '98 was probably the best of them but certainly not a classic final either.'94 followed by '98 were the best tournaments since '86.

All-time classic World Cup moments and matches have been few and far between since '86. Bergkamp’s goal against Argentina in '98 and the finish to the Italy-Germany semi-final in 2006 are probably the two best. The Bulgaria-Germany and Romania-Argentina matches in 1994 are also up there.

holland brazil QF in 94 was up there sid
agreed 1990 QF England - Cameroon is probably the greatest of all time

Germany and Italy was a fascinating game in 2006, end to end action for 120 minutes with a few memorable performances from Totti and Cannavaro that night for Italy.

I really enjoyed England-Argentina and Brazil-Holland games in 98, Ronaldo was out of this world in that semi against Holland.

The Italy-Nigeria game in 94 is one that holds in my memory when Baggio recued us.

1990 was largely forgettable though the England-Cameroon game as mentioned was magnificent.

When you say that the 94 and 98 tournaments were not won by great teams are you referring to the personnel or the football played during the tournament? If it’s the football played by the winners in those tournaments then I would agree wholeheartedly but the French winning side of 98 was a very talented team, a bit like Spain in 2010 they seemed to labour their way to the tournament requiring on win in extra time, another on penalties and two very late goals from Thuram to stop Croatia from making the final.

is suarez out lads?
