Why was this the second item on the news and why was it given as much time if not more on the news than the aircraft accident in Galway. At the yacht regatta only one single person went to hospital (and has since been discharged). It is incomparable to what happened in Galway where 2 people died and 2 more are critical in hospital. Doesn’t make sense to me. Just because children were involved doesn’t mean it should be such coverage imo.
Agreed but think about who’s children they were…a yacht regatta in Dun Laoghaire means they weren’t exactly random knacks from the inner city. I’d imagine the procession of Mercs and Beemers rushing to the scene was something to behold
Piper, I got the Irish Independent on the way into work. The front page covered the 3 stories (plane crash, regatta, history museum). Inside Pgs 2,3,4,5 are given to the regatta in Dun Laoghaire. Pgs 6,7 were given to the plane crash and pg 8 was given to the stairwell collapsing in the National History Museum.
Why the hospitalisation of 1 child would carry twice as much coverage as the tragic death of 2 men is beyond me
Because there was obvious negligence in the case of the yacht regatta and it had the potential to be a disaster on a scale beyond either of the other two with the number of people below.
Not much you can write about the plane crash because nobody knows what happened. Same with the staircase. With the regatta we know wind caused the incident but more importantly we know that it was a ridiculous decision to proceed with the event given the weather warnings in place.
Watching the news yesterday some coast guard geezer said it happened because of “unforeseen weather conditions”. Then one of the kids said something which everyone knew already “We knew the gales were forecast”
BOLLOX!!
But the kids were wearing life jackets and there was never any question of any tragedy resulting yesterday. Some people were taken to hospital as a precaution. Surely they prepare for this sort of incident regulalry? Correct me if I’m wrong. It was a silly decision to go ahead but full safety procedures were in place and thats all it was. A silly decision. I don’t think the same coverage would have been given if this incident had happened in Donegal, Antrim or Cork.
