Watched Dirty Rotten Scoundrels last night, first time seeing it in decades. It’s timeless classic. Caine is brilliant in it, never realized he was nominated for a Golden Globe but not surprised.

The depiction of the Vietnamese was lazy and pretty shit.

I’ve told this story before. My first time watching the Deer Hunter was the night of the Jerry Cooney Larry Holmes title fight. RTÉ put it on before the fight. At about 2 in the morning about half way through the film there an announcement that due to a power outage at the Three Rock transmitter half of South Dublin had missed a bit of the film so they were going to show the film from the start again.
I fell asleep and I awoke when they were announcing that Larry Holmes was still the heavyweight champion of the world.
I don’t think I ever watched the film after.

The Russian roulette scenes were always explained by the director as a metaphor for the U.S governments random and reckless treatment of young American soldiers, the deadly game. But indeed it was never once documented by any POWs but they were horrifically tortured to even death.
But why use the Viet Cong in that evil context if the point was to get at the US government?
Also, it needs to be remembered who the invaders were and what happens when invaders are captured. The US are hardly saints in that respect either.
