Gervais presenting again has me interested in the Globes. I cant help but think it will be a letdown.

I’ll more than likely look at it the following night alright, just out of curiousity, but I really dont find the guy amusing in the least. Still, he’s got ample targets this year with Brand and Perry breaking up to name just one.

As for the awards, is a shame Gleeson is up against Dujardin, you’d fancy his chances against the rest of them but the hype about The Artist will do for him.

This is dungeon material.

If only there was a moderator around with the balls to move it there.

Dungeon.

Predictable enough apart from a few curve balls like The Descendents which I’ve yet to see. Gervais’ opening monologue was shite in the extreme but then I find him to be an odious cunt of the highest order anyway so I could be biased.

Looking forward to the Descendants. Fassbender is excellent in Shame so presume it’s a good performance to win over that. Suprirsed Mulligan didn’t pick up a nomination for Shame, she is really excellent in it too.

Might give Boss a look on the basis of that. Homeland probably deserved its recognition but I’ve no interest in watching a second season.

The Globes are odd at times Rocko, the SAG’s and DAG’s can be more reflective for the Oscars lately. Clooney’s award could be seen as a bit of a star fuck by the Foreign Press. Saying that lthough Clooney naturally is very award friendly and Fassbenders role would be, ow shall we say, a bit divisive.

Has anyone seen Episodes? Have been meaning to watch it. I had an irrational wariness of it early on, but might be time to give it a look at this rate. Same might be true for Boss.

Looking forward to Hugo. After that, it doesn’t seem to a vintage year from that list of winners.

I wantched it and enjoyed it. Not a laugh out loud comedy but very witty in places

Bit of a surprise The Iron Lady not getting nominated for Best British Film surely?

Clooney came across as such a smug cunt on The Golden Globes that I already hope he doesn’t win the Oscar. I’ll have to go to watch The Descendants this weekend to decide if I think he deserves it but it’d take a massive jump to outdo Dujardin.

If I was Clooney I’d be a smug cunt as well, I mean, how could you not be?! But I do understand what you’re saying. I have The Descendants downloaded, along with a few of the other potential winners, must really get around to watching them.

WRT to Iron Lady’s omission, thats a strong British Film category this year and Iron Lady has gotten bad reviews for everything apart from Streep. The more I look at the nomination lists though, the more it hits home just how bad 2011 was for movies on the whole.

Yeah the list of British films is very strong this year. The fact that they weren’t able to give a token nomination to the final Harry Potter flick speaks volumes.

If Clooney does win The Oscar he’ll probably be the second worst actor, in my memory, to win the gong. Nicolas Cage being the worst. He just does the same role in every movie, again I acknowledge that I have yet to see this performance so hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised when I do.

I can’t wait to see Shame. Really hope that Rocko hasn’t overhyped it though

Brilliant movie, quality performance from the cast and it’s splendidly shot. Can be uncomfortable watching at times but that’s part of the appeal.

Couple of big surprises, from this parish there was no nomination for young Fassbender of Killarney, but the big story is Scorsese’s Hugo eclipsing all others with 11 nominations albeit in some of the minor categories.

The nominations for the 84th Annual Academy Awards are here at last, and the big not-a-surprise-at-all is that The Artist leads the way in the biggest categories. Hugo has most nominations, with 11, but The Artist’s 10 nominations are in the bigger categories.

War Horse has six nominations, of which 5 are technical, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo also has 6; The Descendants has five as does Moneyball.

The Best Picture category has, in recent years, gone from 5 nominees to 10 to however-many-they-feel-like, which means that this year there are just nine contenders. The Artist is, of course, among them, but it’s up against The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Moneyball, Midnight In Paris, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, War Horse and The Tree Of Life.

Best Director sees Hazanavicius go up against Alexander Payne, along with old hands Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese and Terrence Malick, his second nomination following one for The Thin Red Line, a welcome addition to the mix.

Best Actress goes more-or-less as suspected, more or less, Rooney Mara get some notice for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo alongside Michelle Williams, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Viola Davis.

Best Actor features a few surprises: Demián Bichir and Jean Dujardin fly foreign flags for A Better Life and The Artist; Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy; George Clooney and Brad Pitt bring the star power for The Descendants and Moneyball respectively.

Best Supporting Actress sees Berenice Bejo, Jessica Chastain, Melissa McCarthy, Janet McTeer and Octavia Spencer face off, leading to what could be a split between the two nominees for The Help.

Best Supporting Actor has Kenneth Branagh going against Jonah Hill, Max Von Sydow, Nick Nolte and Christopher Plummer.

Best Original Screenplay is perhaps the most interesting and non-Oscary category we’ve ever seen, with Bridesmaids in there against Midnight In Paris and A Separation.
