2013 French Open

Federer breaks to go 4-2 up. He does seem to have lifted it a gear.

As I said, it’s not a very good record.

No harm for Federer if he has serious designs on winning this to be involved in a tough match. Tsonga next who he generally has a good record against (apart from blowing a two set lead at Wimbledon in 2011) and you’d imagine David Ferrer in the semi final who has a simply appalling record against Federer. Just checked it there and its 14-0 to Federer in career head to heads over Ferrer.

Ferrer is a grafter who despite getting up to 4/5 in the rankings doesn’t have the natural ability or the game to beat the elite players. Incredible that Roger has now made 36 consecutive Grand Slam Quarter Finals and he’s now tied the record for most singles wins at Roland Garros - 58. Mind you there’s certain self proclaimed experts on tennis around here who don’t rate him as a great player.

That is a staggering statistic.

Funnily enough they have never played each other in a grand slam, if Federer gets past Tsonga first of all then I’d expect Ferrer to take him in the semi.

Kohlschreiber started off really well against Djokovic here.

Kohlschreiber breaks.

That’s a very bullish statement. Ferrer is a fine player but he just seems to lack that belief that he can beat the top players. Just checked Ferrer’s record against Nadal and its not a whole lot better, 20 losses from 23. Ferrer did play very well against Kevin Anderson yesterday, but I’d be amazed if Federer doesn’t prevail if the semi final meeting does come to pass.

Kohlschreiber going well here. He has beaten Novak before at Roland Garros, back in 2009.

Kohlschreiber takes the set after saving two break points in that game.

Djokovic breaks in the second set. He’s not playing at all well and it’s a lot of unforced errors by Kohlschreiber that has let him back in.

Djokovic breaks in the fourth and should really see the game out comfortably now. Kohlschreiber will be kicking himself, Djokovic has not played at all well today and was there for the taking if he could continue like the first set, he made some big errors in the second and failed to capitalise on a number of break points.

Nadal with easily his best performance of the tournament with a comfortable straight sets victory against Nishikori.

Rafa being presented with a lovely birthday cake and presents after the match. Virginia Wade reckons Rafa is one of the most sporting and kind people in sport.

Your obsession/man crush with Nadal is really creepy.

Your delusional mindset about Federer is worrying.

Its a thread about the French Open and you’re on telling us how sweet and kind Nadal is. That’s seriously warped.

You’re the one that’s delusional about Federer. The unanimous consensus among former players and commentators is that he is the greatest player ever to pick up a raquet, 17 Grand Slams to his name and in your book he doesn’t even rank as a tennis great! Still considering you hadn’t heard of Jimmy Connors until a week ago, nothing would surprise me.

He didn’t come across as very sporting or kind on Friday when he was mouthing off about the weather, officials at Roland Garros and match scheduling!

Meanwhile back with the tennis a familiar tale unfolding for Gasquet. He’s lost a 2 set lead.

What’s his record like against Nadal? 20-10 in Nadal’s favour I believe? That just shows you who is the greatest.

15 of those are on clay, which is not proper tennis. Hardly surprisingly its 13-2 to Nadal on clay. On proper tennis surfaces, its 8-7 to Federer.

In any case, individual head to head match ups in any sport, whether individual or team is never the basis for making such assertions of greatness. Its titles won and aesthetic qualities. Teams & individuals can match pecuilarly in a one to one match up.
