Are Tyrone genuine contenders?
Whether we’ve enough to win it or not is a different question but I’m absolutely certain we have the mettle and quality to put it up to any team remaining in the Championship. Outside of the big 4 of the past few years I think we are the best placed along with Monaghan to challenge them.
My two worries would be:
a) Our kickout strategy, running the ball out from the backline for a whole 70 minutes is very attritional and risky - particularly when teams push up on you. This was the turning point in the 2013 semi-final when Mayo decided to press the kickout and forced us to kick it long they dominated the midfield. Tyrone are not the biggest around there and need to improve.
b) The lack of a target man inside, Cavanagh needs to be out the field as do the other alternatives. I’d like to see Niall McKenna given the nod there, he’s had injury problems so is currently out of contention but hopefully he shows well in training and gets the chance. Playing McCurry/Bradley and McAliskey inside is just too small.
He’s slimmer than some of the Tipp players.
