Hurley, CON, Kelly, DOC. All class players
Hurley, Paddy Kelly, Paul Kerrigan I rate O’Connor still…that and a wind at your back…2 points…not good enough.
Hurley’s recent Championship record is abysmal. You’re some man for paper talk.
Is worrying not a bit strong? I don’t think Monaghan have the natural talent and strength in depth to win open games against the top 4 of recent years. But O’Rourke is getting the absolute maximum out of the group of players at his disposal and devising clever and containing game plans to put them in the best position to win. Even being ultra organised and committed I don’t think they’re capable of progressing from yesterday’s win to defeat, say, Tyrone, Kerry and Dublin in succession. But they are what they are - fit, tactically flexible, motivated and hard working with a sprinkling of class.
Hurley is one dimensional and over rated. Was able to use his bulk at underage to get by defenders not so much now.
Kelly isn’t bad but a bit Michael Carrick - short back and sides.
DOC is getting on a bit and not the player of old.
Nobody in football could give a fuck about Tipp either.
Why are you commenting on them so?
Just to let you know.
DOC was the 2nd best player on the field the first day.
Hurley granted is not in form, but it wasn’t underage the past 2 years he was killing teams. I personally think he is too heavy and needs to lighten up and as you say add something else, which he is well capable of.
Kelly is a class act. You are talking they your hole there. He had far less support sat night, but he was Corks best player.
Hurley was utter shit last year in the Championship. He barely scored from play.
So is Gooches. So is Paul flynns. What’s your point?
If we’re going to base it on the last 2 games.
His last game previous to that he more or less took on Mayo on his own.
Ya, that’s all the game is based on alright.
He was double marked in every game.
Jesus Christ Almighty.
If Cork have so many good forwards then how can teams afford to double mark one of them? Hurley showed a lot of promise but he has been really poor over the past two seasons.
Good example of irony there from Kevin.
DOC & PK hardly played last year. Corks issues were not up front last year. They did incredibly well on limited possession.
You never played the game so I don’t expect you to understand it completely. But if your midfield is getting cleaned and your backs are exposed by naive management and 2 of your best players are left out due to injury or strange management calls and 2 more leading players are playing hurling then there is only so much Hurley & CON can do. They are easy to limit when everything else is malfunctioning.
Not sure you understand the meaning.
Far from me not playing the game to understand it, Kevin.
You don’t even understand what you are saying as you are contradicting yourself. A moment ago you were saying Cork are a better team than others because they have more classy scoring forwards and you can’t prosper without them and now you are here trying to defend one of these - a non-scoring inside forward.
I’m not contradicting myself at all. Cork have more room for improvement thaN Tyrone or Monaghan. That would surely indicate that I already believe that some of Corks proven stars are not 100% yet. Structurally sat night Brian Hurley was getting the ball far too far away from goal. That’s not his fault, the support play wasn’t up to scratch.
Of course next Saturday could be just the launching pad for them.
DOC was fairly anonymous the second day though. Don’t think he has the legs/phyiscality to play as a modern centre forward.
Kelly is good when in possession and loads of space but more often than not takes the easy option. Does not break many tackles or score much.
Hurley can win hard ball but as I said is one dimensional, puts the head down and tries to cut inside.
Apart from Colm O’Neill Cork lack forwards that can take games by the scruff of the neck when the chips are down in the white heat of Championship (forget about league) and bully a few of the opposition backs. Until they get that they won’t be next to near an All Ireland.
He has scored 1-04 from play in his last 7 Championship games, games he played the full 70 minutes in them too. That’s not very good for a player who you are trying to blow up. He hasn’t been double marked as you have alluded to. Very few players are double marked anymore, most teams play zonally and cut the space off and it’s something that great forwards will have to deal with. Given that he plays with so many great scoring classy forwards he should find himself getting a lot less attention.
I saw him against Dublin in the 2013 All Ireland QF and I was very impressed and I’ve seen 5 or 6 times since then and he has been rubbish. He’s not a top forward and he’s pretty easily marked.
Compare and contrast Hurley with someone like McCurry, who has been forced to adopt his game and play a much deeper role and his scoring return. McCurry has actually been out of form this season and was hooked against Limerick after 30 minutes and was benched for the Meath game yet he still has nearly matched the scoring return of Hurley alone.
You overrate Cork, we’re talking about the here and now. Talking about Cork having scope to improve is not the here and now, it is paper talk which you seem to be at odds with, only when it suits you I suppose.
