Club rugby in this country is fucked. Nobody gives a flying shit about it. Below the four provincial teams it basically doesn’t exist in the public consciousness at senior level.
Rugby in Dublin has squarely failed to expand outside its traditional heartlands. As long as the schools system is the major producer of players, this will never change. I think it’s 3 out of the 31 man squad at this World Cup that went to non-traditional rugby playing schools (Ross, Furlong, O’Brien). A couple of high-rating TV matches can’t mask that.
And as George Hook admits, the game has a massive problem coming in the very near future due to the concussion issue, which GAA and soccer do not.
In Dublin, it’s GAA, not rugby, that is thriving.

I would suspect (but can’t confirm) that Tommy Bowe is the only player from Ulster who is of a Catholic background. And it’s also worth pointing out that the Bowes are Castle Catholics who sent their son to a proddy school in Armagh.
Rugby has not crossed the class divide, the people that have jumped on the bandwagon have very little interest in actually playing the sport.

No, it’s not. I would garner the standard is at a higher level than 10 years ago. There have been some credible performances from LOI sides in Europe this year, notably Dundalk running BATE close who recently beat Roma. I watch the odd LOI game and it’s not too bad. The problem with the domestic game in Ireland is the general apathy from the EPL barstoolers public. It’s nowhere near the pits you are claiming, as usual it’s sensational, unqualified nonsense that you’re spouting.
Rugby is the most popular casual sport in the country but nobody actually gives a shit about it deep down, it’s a great excuse to go out on the piss but everyone will get over a bad result within half an hour.
