Killarney won’t get a game for five years once the new Pairc Ui Chaoimh is finished.
I wouldn’t be so sure, Tipperary and Kerry will happily alternate Munster finals for the next few years I’d say
As if that was the sole difference. Should O’Neill be castigated for missing the 45 by that measure?
It was a bad miss and ultimately cost Cork the game. No getting away from that.
Not to mention the plainly stupid point effort from play as he was running out to the stand on left hand side. Or the foolish decision to try kick a free off the ground on the left sideline. Poor decision making.
He was bollixed. Can’t understand why Goulding didn’t take it. CON SHOULD HAVE BEEN WHIPPED OFF WITH 10 to go, he was wasted.
Immediate reaction is both teams will be happy. Kerry as they were blessed, Cork cos they found a very deliberate style of play and found best positions for a number of players. They also exposed Kerry for the force they are at the back. And there is very little to remedy it.
Kerry will feel they have more scope for improvement. However what’s extremely significant is the mental strength cork showed today. Easily the most notable thing of the game. Kerry still have more better composed footballers which is very important but I think the talent is now starting to show in Cork. Kerry’s subs were pretty ininflectual. That’s a worry for them. Gooch is struggling, and that’s been the word for a while. I’m sure he’ll improve, but as of now it really looks like he is unlikely to ever reach his best again.
Corks half back line was immense going forward and Barry O Driscoll despite a few 1st half mistakes was very influential.
Kerrigans black card rocked them, but Paddy Kelly is a better replacement and his patient clever play with Collins at the back is a better balance.
Bringing Alan O Connor back has already been justified and was surely MOTM.
Great game, great crowd, great banter, wonderful to be home and in Killarney for this again. This is what I missed the most. Got a few free pints in the Kerry tent as well after, at least we got something off the cunts.
Shields was put in his best position today and excelled. It’s astonishing you still hold a grudge from a minor game about 12 years ago.
You utter spastic.
Thought he was ineffective in the first half but awesome after the break.
Do you really think Cuthbert got it right today? It is a sad day for football purist when you see Cork essentially playing an Armagh,Donegal or Tyrone type gameplan. Letting Kerry win every kick out by dropping so deep & inviting them on. Its okay playing a counter attack based game if you move the ball quickly by foot passing but in one run of play i must of counted at least 12 consecutive handpasses from Cork.
Goold was poor at midfield granted but O’Connor was immense & if Cork had showed more gumption and pressed up on the kick outs they may well have won them.
I’ve flagged this post as inappropriate, what a nasty word to use.
As for Shields, Johnny Buckley mugged the baldy prick off and the chap even double hopped the ball out of sheer rattledness at one point.
Maybe TV would be a different view but this was nothing like the lateral Counihan type of play. This was patient play with a clear pattern and purpose. It’s a way of dictating play and it will (not saying it will beat) slow and frustrate the likes of Kerry and Dublin.
I was delighted with the better, although far from perfect, composure was better than I have seen in a while.
But far more than anything was the agressive mental toughness cork showed. Going out hitting Kerry backs after a score. Standing up to them physically an not letting the set backs bury them.
Major positives
- Cadogan generally excellent t at FB
- Shields outstanding at no. 6, his natural position
- Donnacha at no. 11 and influential
- the class of Barry O Driscoll being realised although in a surprising position
- Alan O Connor proving his worth (Rocko he still beat his man first half but cork avoided him a lot)
- not an over reliance on CON
- Paddy Kelly back - such a composed footballer. Makes cork a more dynamic team.
Huge step forward, with lots of work still to do. Personally a sett much looking at it from a technically and tactical POV, I’m delighted. Ronan Macs finger prints all over it.
A major negative is the supply of ball into the forwards though. Ye are actually blessed with a decent bunch of forwards but deploying the likes of Kerrigan as a sweeper is a depressing tactic. Paddy Kelly would be better suited as he can vary his distribution better than most IMO.
Ya, I mentioned that above. Kerrigan is the wrong man.
However we were brilliantly patient and got our forward really good quality ball and they weren’t wasting their time chasing shorty ball. They also seemed to have a clear instruction not to “over work” and they played smart work v’s hard work policy. This means they are fresher when the ball they want/like comes in. That’s key and that’s what Dublin, Kerry and donegal have been excellent at. Cork and Mayo have not been as good in that department and that’s why they have generally lagged behind an their forwards are slightly easier to mark.
They have shown their hand now and it will be interesting to see can they develop it further.
Forgot to mention how fantastic Kevin O Driscoll was, much maligned, it should make a world of difference to his confidence.
Sean Quigley with 0-14 for Fermanagh today.
0-07 from play.
Am I the only one who thought it was a penalty?
That 45 at the end from Colm O’Neill was abysmal. Had to be kicked dead.
I thought it was a penalty.
your analysis of cork is at odds with your analysis after the league final
@caoimhaoin - If Cork go out of the hurling next week what are the chances of Aidan Walsh being drafted in?
