2015 Club Championships - the lads are STILL at it

Have we decided what a city is yet? Does it have to have a cathedral?

2 sides of the same coin

A cathedral is an absolute minimum requirement I would have thought. Doesn’t city status derive from royal charter? I learned back in geography in national school that there were 9 cities between Éire and Northern Ireland - Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Limerick, Londonderry, Galway, Waterford, Armagh & Kilkenny. Kilkenny regardless of designation or cathedral is really just a town.

That would include Cobh. Which really would be tragic.

Kilkenny is a city

Its alwaya around the same when we are successful generally if we don’t have a strong city with 2-3 minimum from Nemo and Barrs then we are in trouble.

To have a city feel you need a bit of Georgian architecture pal in my opinion.

Dublin, Cork and Limerick have that. No offence to Galway and KK posters but they don’t feel like a city when you are there.

Both are great spots regardless but lack a true feeling of being in a city when you visit them.

There are 26 diocese. Not alone would Cobh be a city if that criteria were applied but also Enniscorthy, Thurles, Loughrea & Ballaghderreen would also be cities.

Sure it is.

The term city is used to different degrees in different countries.

Portobello have a football team don’t they?

Are we finished? Yes?

Great.

I see Brendan Maher is doing #thetoughest this year with Adelaide Strikers in Australia.

I could be dragged back in at any second.

Indeed they do, although I’m not sure why you are asking me as they are based in D6.

Portobello is D2 mate, their pitch is in D6 but their hearts are in D2*.

*I know nothing about the club other than it exists

I remember a pal of mine from the occupied six counties played for a club in Donnybrook and nearly lost the plot (late 90s early 2000s) when his team mates arrived to a game drinking coffees

I wouldn’t know too much about them myself. Only played them a couple of times and they seemed to be made up of students and folk that live in Rathmines. I don’t even think they have an underage section. I’d say their influence in Dublin 2 wouldn’t stretch too far beyond the doors of the pubs in Camden Street.

There’s a fierce local rivalry between themselves and Ranelagh Gaels

portobello are roaster only as far as i know, would any dubs from there would go to synge street?

Dubs who went to Synge St would typically play with Synge Street (eg Anton O’Toole) now merged with Templeogue.
