2015 Club Championships - the lads are STILL at it

And I’d imagine you never saw Canavan before 97.

Course I did mate.

Then you should know Canavan was a superior player.

Sounds like an excuse blaming O’Se.

You’ve got to admire @Nembo_Kid pursuit. He never waivers.

Basket weaving is a protestant activity.

End of.

No fact?

Factoid is the modern term, I believe.

Wasn’t Fitzgerald’s seminal performance delivered against MAYO? I repeat MAYO. Fucking Mayo. He decorated a grand few matches but Canavan was decisive and magnificent in practically every game he ever played. Don’t be daft, you free state bastards.

What an All-Ireland. You can’t say Kerry didn’t do it the hard way that year.

Fitzmaurice single handily kept Kerry from being destroyed and mentally damaged for decades. When Kerry were shit, and I mean they were very shit (they were fucking useless sometimes), he made games out of mis-matches against Cork. Cork invariably still won as they were a superb team but they found it hard to quieten M. Fitz. If they didn’t have him there would have been regular hammerings to Cork and just like the impact Kerry turning the screw had on Cork after 99, it is widely believed by those in Kerry that the same affect would have transpired with Kerry to at least some degree. Billy Morgan and Bomber Liston both recently enough recounted that he saved Kerry football in the bad years. An awful lot of Kerry people believe that. That '97 win was a huge win for Kerry and gave them belief again along with the 21’s they had. And that Mayo team was far better than the '04 & '06 teams who themselves relied heavily on Ciaran McDonald & Nallen and a couple more. He had everything, everyone else was missing something, but he had it all. He could play midfield, centre forward, inside, he was athletic, two footed to an extraordinary level and was clutch. Gooch only kicks off the weak foot when games are done and dusted, Fitz did it based simply on which side of the field he was on. Has Canavan ever hit frees off the ground with his weak foot? He was also tough and that is often underestimated as he got some serious treatment in the early days but teams generally gave that up as it was completely futile. The main draw back in the M.Fitz argument is he hates the limelight and avoided it at all costs and so he is not in the publics mind.

He is top 3 sports stars in history in my eyes. That’s how good he was.

I would love to see him manage Kerry and prove all sorts can be successful and it would encourage the quite non-egotistical types to pursue management.

Has Fitzmaurice ever dragged his team to victory over the reigning All Ireland Champions when his team are down to 13 men?

What has Fitzmaurice got to do with this?

Kerry people often make great play about how if you don’t have at least four All-Ireland medals you’re a nobody.

Fitzgerald is a nobody.

That Cavan team beat a Derry team that had hammered Peter the Greats Tyrone.

No one is disputing that Kerry won a soft AI that year but Fitzgerald dragged them kicking and screaming over the line.

Canavan produced the greatest individual performance I’ve ever seen that day, pal.
