2015 Leinster Final : Galway V Kilkenny

Galway playing a third midfielder traditionally confuses the fuck out of Kilkenny.

If you see him getting beat you have to accept that the full back is doing a good job. Yes and you accept that by moving him somewhere else where he can get on more ball

Did you watch the game? How many times did canning get a good fast ball 1 on 1 with holden? Once really when he scored the goal of the year, almost every other time he was double marked, was held by holden and the other player swept up. What can canning do, the ball coming into him is generally putrid and heā€™s always the focus of attention for the opposition. Callanan is almost always left one on one as teams have to worry about other tipp forwards, and most of the ball Callanan gets is low and or diagonal, which is perfect for a full forward not double marked. You could see it time and again yesterday, once the backs launched it the Kilkenny half backs just turned and ran towards joe. He shows his class by still producing when hes the focus of all the other teams attention. Half the reason tj reid or hogan can be so effective is teams always have to worry about the other one when planning for them, joe has no one to take the focus off him. Simple cunts cant see this, a high ball drops in, three lads are around him its broken and cleared and braindead roasters think hes useless.

And lessen your ability to get the goals that you need to win the game. Youā€™re shooting yourself in the foot.
You donā€™t need him to get on more ball out the field. You need better ball into him where he can make the biggest impact or use him a decoy to make space for others. Joe on the ball 25 yards out, panic stations. Joe on the ball, 70 yards out is not a big deal. If you bring him out the field and he gets a couple of points, big wup, itā€™s unlikely to get you back into the game.

Has there been any example of a game where Galway were behind, they brought Joe out the field and he brought them back into the game with points? I canā€™t think of one. Even when Galway were behind in the first game against KK last year it was goals that brought Galway back into it.

The only time Iā€™d consider bringing Joe out the field would be when I had a lead that I wanted to see out.

He didnā€™t get good ball in because of the Kilkenny tactics but he got plenty of ball in. He wasnā€™t winning this ball so should have been moved out the field to centre forward or midfield. Cluaindinic is saying he should have been kept in there no matter what which I think is wrong.

Well your attitude seems to be if itā€™s not working change it. Thatā€™s fairly logical.
I just want to make sure that if you are going to change something that it is going to help win the game. I donā€™t think there is any evidence of Galway getting back into a game with Joe Canning out the field.

Donā€™t just change things for the sake of change.

The way Iā€™d look at it is heā€™s their best player by a mile and itā€™s a waste if heā€™s not getting any ball

Ok, but would you rather he got on the ball loads at half back?

Galwayā€™s problem is not where to put Joe, their problem is finding the best surrounding cast to maximise Joeā€™s effectiveness in his best position, both on the ball and as a decoy. If he is double marked, there must be someone free and likely space to work with. They need to be prepared for this and find creative ways of exploiting defences fixating on Joe.

No Iā€™d always have him somewhere where he could score from range so centre forward or midfield if full forward isnā€™t going well. I do see your point as well that they need their other forwards to step up and get the rewards from the extra space in other areas though

Weā€™re 7 years into the how to maximize Joe conversation

I thought galwayā€™s effort was absolutely fucking outstanding and it took a kk on top of their game to beat them. The score was an accurate reflection of the game, whatever AC says, but at last I am happy that Galway have a level of consistency. If the heads donā€™t drop, and things run for them, they can still give anyone a run for their money. No one will want them again. Cody would be wary as fuck were he to play them again. To beat kk, they need things to fall for them like the ball not bouncing straight to tj Reid for the goal.
The ref was very good by and large. Impossible to pull every free, but he let them at it, and had no real influence on the outcome.
Not that it means fuck all, but Iā€™m as proud of this team and that performance as I have ever been if a Galway side. They gave it a right fucking rattle.
Please God, they will do more of the same.

Ps Flynn and mannion are youngsters, and look great already.
Kk are a fucking outstanding side all the same. Congratulations to them. They were great yesterday. Cody was delighted with that performance, you could tell by the head on the fucker.

Clare are Galwayā€™s most likely quarter-final opponents and I wouldnā€™t put a cent on Galway coming through that.

That was my take from it too Flatty. Cody will do well to get a work rate as good as that again out of his team this summerā€¦ it was as good as I have ever seen.

Did you think so? I thought Galway put KK under serious pressure for about 10 minutes of the second half, and then when yer mans goal shot went wide they dropped the heads and were never next nor near being I serious contention again. I thought KK were fairly comfortable all through and Galways lack of serious conditioning meant they were never going to be able to see out a close game.

There was a shot of Donnellan after about 55 minutes and he looked like he was about to expire. Tannian was taking the tired lazy options from about 20 minutes to go.

And how many of those years has he been tried in a free role around midfield?

Iā€™d agree with this too, in boxing parlance we worked hard and pressurised them early, landed a few good shots but weā€™re always behind on the scorecard. Kilkenny reminded me of their performances against tipp in the 2011 final and even the replay last year, just do enough to keep the opposition at arms length and be happy to take points. they are an exceptional team, thereā€™s no point gnashing teeth or ripping into our lads too much, weā€™re a work in progress and still donā€™t know our best 15 but are closer to it now. People curse them and get exasperated, but itā€™s like rugby fans giving out when we donā€™t beat New Zealand. They have better players end of story. If they perform adequately and we donā€™t, as what happened yesterday, weā€™re not going to beat them. But play out of our skins and they donā€™t play out of theirs and we can do it. Weā€™re moving in the right direction I think, all the qualifier teams are regressing, and thereā€™s no guarantee anyone will get as close to Kilkenny as we did yesterday. Tipp might, or they might get destroyed by them as happens every few times they meet.

I agree to an extent, but kk werenā€™t that comfortable I didnā€™t think until the last ten mins, and they looked like they had been in a battle. I have rarely seen Cody as animatedly and openly pleased. That was kk near the top of their game b
I thought Galway were great.
Itā€™s my honest opinion.
