Liam Dunne of all people made some fair points about The Walsh Cup on RTE Radio One this evening. He disagreed with Eddie Brennan’s call to scrap it. It’s not a burn-out related issue - nobody forced Kilkenny to play their U21s. He also mentioned the use of funds generated for injured players like Tomás Waters in recent years. Dunne reckons it should be an 8-team competition comprising inter-county teams only. He said the colleges can prepare for the Fitzgibbon Cup separately. He said he can’t choose from his full squad because players are tied up with colleges. These players risk losing scholarships if they prioritise the county team in this competition.
It’s fairly ridiculous that Munster sides are squad building from a full deck of cards while Leinster sides are accommodating third level institutions.
Is the league not enough time to build? Do these pre season comps not allow the net to be thrown far wider and give lads a chance who wouldn’t normally make a panel?
Agreed. The Walsh (Welch) and O Byrne Cup are great competitions run by a great organization (apart from their ludicrous decision to allow themselves be beholden to giving Kilkenny a few bob in 2016), and in aid of a great cause. But the colleges can go fuck themselves, cunts.
Did you not get the memo? For us 1B unfortunates, league promotion is apparently more important than anything we do in the championship. The league is therefore no place for experimentation - we need to have our experimenting done in the Walsh Cup but we don’t have access to our full panel because there’s a raft of them playing with colleges. If we get a result in Limerick in 3 weeks against that backdrop it’ll be a magnificent achievement and a managerial miracle.
Well the draw has fucked you over there. you hardly think having players training and improving playing fitzgibbon is a bad thing overall. Plus a hidden gem might be unearthed in January, as unlikely as that is. I’m just gutted Dublin hammered us today we could have had an early season online shouldering competition.
