Depends on how you do it. A lot of the lads who go over have the option taken up to study in college whilst there. I’m nearly sure after Conor Meredith was dropped and his AFL career was over, he stayed another year to finish out his college degree. Back home at 24 or so and after completing a college degree and having it all paid for and experiencing professional sports. Not a bad way to do it at all. Obviously the chances of making it are slim, the vast majority who go over come back after 2 to 3 years, but sure not much different to others who go abroad for some life experience.
