Are you kidding?
Ireland needed 4 points from this set of games to stay on track. So a win against Serbia and all will be right with the World again. But we are absolute muck to watch.
We have scored 9 goals in 7 games, 3 against Moldova. So take away Moldova and itâs an average of 1 goal a game. We donât even play decent long ball football. We are shit at that too.
We are down towards the bottom of the table WRT second place qualifiers as well and we have Wales & Serbia to play while the Moldova game likely wonât count in that table.
Shane Long is leading the line , naturally we donât score many
Slab in - Long out â He should really only be used for the last 20 of games when defenders are tiring.
Whelan needs to go too but it wonât happen â We need some one to get on the ball in midfield⌠We have to Start Brady and Wez and anyone else we have that can pass a ball more than 5 yards.
Aaron Bolger is the future
play him vs Serbia
In fairness to Long, limited and all as he is, he has to spend the whole game chasing after shit high balls. There isnât a striker in the World whoâd score lots of goals in that setup.
I can understand why OâNeill would get pissed off. He is trying his best with a limited bunch of players and you have simpletons like OâDonoghue quizzing him just to keep the bosses happy in RTE and his journalist buddies in ink.
As for Dunphy, once he begins to realise that Wes Houlahan canât play in a two man centre midfield instead of Glenn Whelan, as he has suggested before, maybe then he can have an opinion.
The great Robbie Keane managed it for nearly 20 years.
What a guy.
Didnât Robbie usually have a tall plank beside him to knock down those long balls?
We need to bring back the big man little man combo
We never truly replaced Gary Doherty*

Itâs actually more than plausible that second place wonât be enough for Ireland. Only the top 8 Group runners up qualify. Ireland currently are 8th in this table, two points ahead of Bosnia. Points are not counted for results against the bottom teams so technically you can rule out any points to still be claimed from Moldova. Looks like a straight battle between Greece and Bosnia for that 2nd spot. If Greece currently occupied 2nd spot they would actually be ahead of Ireland.
Tomorrow simply is a must win game for Ireland.
Agreed. We need to setup to win. A draw isnât much use, itâd have us level with the Welsh going over there (assuming other results go as expected) and the Welsh will likely have a better goals difference and goals scored record than us by then, given they are playing Moldova and Georgia.
In other words there isnât a whole pile of difference between us drawing and losing, either way weâd be heading to Cardiff needing a win.
Now maybe the Welsh could drop points against Georgia too, in which case the draw might do us, but as youâve said thatâd likely leave us rock bottom of the second place qualifying teams and weâd probably need to win in Cardiff anyway.
A win tonight is vital if we want to keep qualification in our hands.
Rain. Advantage Ireland.
Weâre going to do it.
The forecast is for it to dry up.
