The Argentina legend with the side parting has been appointed to referee the final.
Four posts on the World Cup Final in the near 48 hours since the final pairing was confirmed. If England were in it, there’d be about 400 posts by now.
Two Oirish lads here in work, enjoy watching football on telly, aren’t going to watch the final because England aren’t in it.
When the year ends in an 8, there’s a good chance of a first time World Cup winner - Brazil 1958, Argentina 1978, France 1998.
The two big hurling matches are far more important.
Someone genuinely believed the Englander soccerballers were more box office than the Limerick hurlers! Mortified.
They speak for a lot of people. France v Croatia is not a pairing that captures the imagination. It feels like a pairing that more befits a last 16 tie in a European Championship than a World Cup final.
It’s the equivalent of a Champions League final between Inter Milan and Bayer Leverkusen or an All-Ireland football final between Cork and Roscommon or a Superbowl between Denver and Jacksonville.
The party already feels well and truly over before everybody has moved on to the nightclub. I imagine most people who have in interest in the World Cup will still watch it but with no great enthusiasm.
A France v England final on the other hand would have been like a Liverpool v Real Madrid Champions League final crossed with a Dublin-Mayo All-Ireland final crossed with a New York Giants v Dallas Cowboys Superbowl*.
It’s everybody’s loss that we’ve been denied it.
*I’m aware those teams can’t meet in a Superbowl under the current format so don’t bother pointing that out.
If the weather is still holding on Sunday, I very much doubt i’ll be sitting down in front of the television to watch France v Croatia at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. The tournament died once England exited.
There will be over 1 billion people tuned in Sunday, you mug…It’s the biggest sporting occasion on the planet and little Croatia winning it would be one of the great sporting stories ever.
What’s the population of the earth at the moment, about 7 billion? So if its a billion watching I’ll be in the with the 80% or so of the world’s population who won’t be watching? Did you not say the two hurling matches were more important? I was thinking of heading to Thurles.
Your seethingness has you all over the place — The hurling build up is more important to the forum and post count on here.
I cant account for what the world’s population will be doing but I’d imagine a few billion will be in bed - another billion probably in jungles / caves/ sewers and dont have tv. And the rest are women and young kids… And of course you out in your back garden.
What am I supposedly seething about? I don’t watch much soccer beyond Spurs and England. If anyone else is playing I’m not that bothered.
Sitting out your back garden like a child saying the world cup is over- I hate it, I hate it, I hate it …
Is there any televised cricket on Sunday, Geoff?
If there is, it could be a pretty appealling alternative for those who are watching the box.
There’s still on this one day nonsense. The highlight of the English sporting summer will get under way at Edgbaston on 1 August with the first of the five tests to decide the destination of the Pataudi Trophy.
