Djokovic is the Number 1 seed. Grand Slam convention and protocol is the Number 1 seed is in the top half of the draw and plays first. The organisers turned the draw on its head and allowed the Number 2 seed (Nadal) to play a day earlier than the Number 1 seed all tournament up to the semi final then put out the Number 1 seed out second in the semi finals.
