In 2002 and 2010 which had a lot of shocks early on, only South Korea in 2002 carried it on in the knockout stages.

The knockout stages in World Cups mostly go according to form and quality and tend to have few real shocks.

Russia beating Spain on penalties in 2018 was a shock but like Korea in 2002, they were a host nation.

In some senses it’s always a shock when Brazil lose, but they lost to good Dutch and Belgian teams in 2010 and 2018 and it shouldn’t have been any shock when France and Germany beat them in 2006 and 2014.
