Mayo were caught there by the same dynamic that effectively ended Galway’s season in 2018. They went into the final game already qualified against an unqualified opponent, and coasted through the game. They thought there was nothing at stake. But there was something at stake.
Galway’s defeat to Monaghan in 2018 meant they played Dublin rather than Tyrone in the semi-final, and that was the end of their season.
Roscommon were caught out by Kildare today in a similar fashion.
Galway hurlers against Dublin in 2019 too.
It’ll be interesting to see how Galway deal with this dynamic against Armagh. They’re already through, but their All-Ireland hopes to a large extent rest on winning today. But the consequences of losing aren’t fatal. That’s a recipe for an Armagh win. If Galway win today, they’ll win the All-Ireland.
Is Newbridge not undergoing repairs? They speculated on the radio there that Kildare might choose Tullamore as their “home” venue. Kildare are a complete enigma this season (as always).
They knew that, but they didn’t really think it would happen. The same dynamic that almost did for Tipperary the other week. Psychology is mad. That mental safety net takes the edge off players.
