Screeney is going to be another Shane Conway. His best exposure will come if he goes to UL or DCU to College or at best if Kilcormac Killoughey can start to win in Leinster and go deep in the AI Club.
Offaly dont really have it and wont be next nor near competing at Liam McCarthy in the next decade. They are a million miles off it.
Most of the stuff with someone like Hego (and other top forwards) is off the ball pulling & dragging, when the referee isnāt looking. Itās cynical enough stuff, which definitely happens in football too, but I donāt know what referees can really do without significantly increased support from linesmen & umpires.
Screeney wonāt be flaked off the pitch. Obviously teams will try and hold onto him, and stop him making runs into space and try to create physical contests. That has happened for as long the game has been played, you donāt just let the good players on the opposition team do what they want.
But as long as Screeney works hard, his movement, feet & wrists will be a nightmare for defenders. Heās more likely to be hindered by Offaly not being great rather than how the game is reffed. Another argument being peddled during the week was that one of Limerickās little fellas was being given too much protection because heās small. He played into the frees, for sure, but he was also hit high.
Small fellas with low centres of gravity win some amount of frees in hurling if their touch is good enough.
Ah theyāll surely climb up to a level where they can challenge for 3rd spot in Leinster and therefore an All-Ireland quarter-final. Even Darren Gleesonās Antrim werenāt a million miles off that this season.
They were 30 points off a hapless Tipperary this year.
They have a mountain of work ahead of them if they are going to compete at all. Thereās nobody at all on their current Senior Team who is up to it and of their Under 20 team they have maybe 5 or 6 who might be up to it. They are depending on all these lads to train on and thats far from guaranteed.
They will ship a fair bit of pain in next two to three years if they do get up Liam McCarthy.
They could call the fouls when they spot it, but then the ālet it flow, itās a manās gameā brigade get all upset. When they donāt call fouls for the pulling and dragging and body checks on the ball tis hard to expect them to do it for off the ball stuff.
