2023 Club Championships

For all their faults, between the 2017 and 2020 All Ireland Finals which Waterford played in, 7 different individual Ballygunner players started across those two finals - SOKY, Kenny, Coughlan, Mahony x2, Hogan & Dessie.

TG4 has still a way, way bigger audience than GoGo TV.

You’ve mentioned 6 as there or thereabouts. That’s surely an outstanding number.

There’s 3 definites and three potential panel players. It’s not an amazing return for 10 in a row winners in a small county.

I’m sure it kills them.

If you asked someone from Ballymun Kickhams or Patrickswell what they’d prefer their elite clubmen to be winning and I’d say they’d give you the same answer.

There’s a price to be paid for everything.

If Mount Sion got there act together underage and challenged Ballygunner they mightn’t be so bitter.

I am sure Patrickswell people would rather an all Ireland club at this stage.

4 in 2017
3 in 2020.
I don’t think Peter Hogan started in either final?

Mount Sion missed a trick in the early 2000s when the Carrickphierish suburb was being built and they effectively left it to De La Salle. That’s when a club is weakest, when a good senior team masks other issues in the club.
It’s left Mount Sion, Roanmore, St Saviours and Erin’s Own fishing out of the same small pond.

I’m pretty sure he started in 2020.

I don’t think so.

I don’t follow the parochial hurling scene & last Sunday was my first televisual viewing of hurling games since the All Ireland Senior Hurling Final last summer. Goodness me it was bleak - boggy pitches, empty cavernous “stadiums”, commentators squawking away incomprehensibly in some foreign language, poorly conditioned players delivering a brutal product. Everything about it was absolutely grim. It’s a disgrace the amount of financial resources the government provides to the GGA at the expense of other pursuits & they also get way too much coverage on television & radio.

I don’t really buy the small county bit because Waterford have been a fine side for years

5 seconds of checking Wikipedia says he didn’t.

I stand corrected.

He was a key man under Cahill the following year.

It’s understandable that the hurling suffered badly from having to compete for attention with such a marquee event as the women’s FAI Cup final.

Smallest population in Munster.

I was talking quality. Waterford is not a small hurling county. I’ve always perceived it as an elite one.
