2023 Club Championships

On another note, I take it yesterday was the last ever Hurling Match of significance with the humble white sliotar.

Do these new yellow sliotars have a chip in them or something that could tell if the ball is over the line or not?

What a way for the humble white sliotar to bow out.

Paddy Burke not corner back no ? Neil McManus a bit unlucky maybe. Good team alright

Ideally yes, but I had to get him in and the full back line was already packed.

I suppose here is as good a place as any.

Paraic passed away on Saturday. Some man to bombard the Twitter machine with all sorts of GAA related musings and stats.

Some character. A fountain of football knowledge and the tributes that have been paid are a testament to the esteem he was held.

He would have loved that performance from Hercules yesterday.

Eanna Burkes score to be the last with that sliotar is fairly fitting…

Funnily enough he referenced scoring with his eyes closed in the post match interview.
Jedi…conspiracy #5

McManus won Cushendall the ulster championship so he needs to be in there.

John Conlon of Clonlara also deserves a place after his exhibition v Kiladangan.

I can’t be having Pauric Mahony; his freetaking performance in the Semi Final was the losing of the game for Ballygunnar

Paraic Mahony was probably the best player in the Munster Club this year.

John Conlon is not worthy of a place for playing well against 13 man Kildangan.

McManus is unlucky but this is a ruthless business.

Performances against cannon fodder in Munster should not come into consideration.

He choked when the chips were down.

Was he not lining out in the half forward line anyway?

Haha god no. They are the exact same.

The smart sliotars with the chip essentially says they are at the specifications/grade necessary to be used in X grade match. There’s no data from them.

The Munster Championship does count for something. I wouldn’t consider Na Piarsaigh cannon fodder, a game where Mahony was the outstanding player on the pitch.

You are finding fault for the sake of finding fault here.

Mark Bergin probably choked too yesterday if you are to take your logic.

I can’t agree; you’ve given Ballygunnar 5 spaces on the team; your picking of Pauric Mahony would be akin to giving Kerry’s Seanie O’Shea an All Star for playing well in the Munster Championship then kicking 5 frees wide in an All Ireland Semi Final where Kerry were hot favourites.

Pauric Mahony is a keystone player on a team which every year has designs on winning an All Ireland club. He has significant experience of playing in front of packed houses at the highest level, and has nailed frees in pressure situations regularly in the past. By his standards, the freetaking performance in the All Ireland Semi was a bottle job.

Mark Bergin, fine club player that he is, would have nowhere near that level of experience or expectation placed on him. OLG were in bonus territory yesterday, and can look back on the year as overall being a success. Could the same be said for Mahony and Ballygunnar? Will they be happy with how the year panned out?

You’ve said above that this is a ruthless business, but you don’t seem willing to extend this ruthlessness to Ballygunnar.

Ballygunner have 4 on the team which is what they are entitled to. They lost a game on penalties to the eventual champions having played some very good stuff in the previous three games.

David Clifford’s last 5 shots in an All Ireland Senior Football Final were all kicked wide. Is he a bottler too? Should he not be FOTY?

You are creating an argument when there is no need for one.

Pauric Mahony is a bluffer and a spoofer when it comes down to it, same as Ballygunner in general. St Thomas’ now have two All Ireland titles. Ballygunner? One (freak) win, for all their huffing and guffing.

The Munster stuff is irrelevant, as was broached. A fool like Kieran Shannon, generally just a grandmaster of the bleeding obvious, was on recently about Ballygunner being ‘the greatest ever Munster club hurling team’. Did you ever… Everything is ‘Munster’ with that clown. Like a certain class of Cork person (although he is at least half Fermanagh), he has never got over 2006.

Same with Derek McGrath. Wrote in January 2023 about Ballygunner being “ten years ahead” of everyone else. Another patent fool.

Bluffer & Spoofer is a tad harsh.

He’s been a very good servant for Waterford and excellent player for ballygunner. Not in the same league as TJ and probably not even as effective as Colin Fennelly but good nonetheless.

I dont know why Ballygunner’s win in 2022 is deemed a freak as if they weren’t bloody well entitled to score a late goal.

I didnt hear Kieran Shannon but what he says seems to be reasonably correct.

Derek McGrath was idiotic alright.

Mahoney is a gadget player. Lovely striker of a ball but hasn’t much else. He got a long enough run at I/C level despite not offering much aside from free taking.

A lad in the same bracket as Ger Farragher and Colin Ryan
