Louth or Meath wont win an all ireland any decade soon but will be in shake up for a provincal title or two, a Leinster title in a few wks time will be some fillip to the game in either county and the occasion will be a boost for both counties
why people look to scrap the provincals I dont understand, it would be a poor decision to scrap them or play them in Jan\Feb
Louth are a very popular team with Dublin supporters as historically theyâve nearly always rolled over and had their bellies tickled by Dublin, and especially because they hate Meath more than Dublin do. Ger Brennan being manager is the icing on the cake. If Louth can win their first Leinster title since 2010 itâll be a hugely popular victory.
Whoever wins this could inspire kids to change the fortunes in the long run. Itâs crazy what a provincial win can do to get supporters and players at underage involved and focused. Louth have two big populations centers in Drogheda and Dundalk. It could be a serious shot in the arm for the countyâs ambitions, on the back of the shots in the arm provided by Harte, and subsequently Brennan. The time is now.
Am I right in touching my phone to formulate a collection of words that states Drogheda & Dundalk contribute little to county teams given their strong association football preference? Maybe our man on the ground @caulifloweredneanderthal can confirm or explain if theyâre making inroads in the bigger population centres? Itâs traditionally been Stabannon Parnells, St Maryâs Ardee, Mattock Rangers & others I donât know/canât recall backboning the county team.
Actually cauli, whatâs behind the recent upsurge in fortunes? Theyâre clearly improving hugely at underage level too. Presumably a mix of financial backing & a competent organisation structure combining to good effect.
But that triangle from Ardee to Carrickmacross to Dundalk is fairly bleak & I posted before how the inhabitants, or around 63% of them, exist in a parallel universe where itâs still 1987 in terms of fashion & mannerisms. Iâve been to Darver Castle for a couple of weddings (& the odd Sunday lunch on a special occasion before they focused solely on weddings) & I quite liked the place. The centre of excellence is just sitting there in a very quiet rural townland.
I regret to inform you that you are a little outdated in your thinking there. 4 of the starting 15 on Sunday were from the towns. Newtown Blues are a Drogheda club and won 3 in a row in Louth a few years back, Sean OâMahonys from Dundalk won their first title as well in the recent past. Clan na Gael from Dundalk had a lad playing Sunday, and Dundalk Gaels are intermediate champions and have a load of fellas on the Louth u20 squad in the Leinster final.
Your observations on the west Louth population are as astute as ever though.
Newtown Blues are the kings of Louth football and itâll be a long time before anyone takes over.
Dundalk Gaels could be a team to watch in coming years. Won county intermediate last year but as the most central town team, theyâve a huge draw and apparently have very good underage structures in place. Theyâve four or five fellas on the u20 panel.
In Dundalk, youâve only the Gaels senior this year I think. Sean O Mahonys, Clan na Gael, Young Irelands are all intermediate. Dowdallshill are junior. Na Piarsaigh on the fringes of the town bordering on Blackrock are also junior. There are probably too many clubs in a sense for what is primarily a soccer town.
Out the road you have (my own) Geraldines in Haggardstown who are very much senior and have a few county players.
Edit: @Halfpipe I see now that you said most of the same things as I did about the Gaels!
Thank you for putting me right. I should also clarify (cc MicheĂĄl Martin) that I retain a fondness for Dooleyâs of Edmondstown as a roaster dinner stop on the N2 between Ardee & Carrickmacross but The Monasterboice Inn trumps it if youâre continuing on the M1 & not turning off at the Ardee exit.
