I was looking at our 2002 qualification results and 2006.
They were proper campaigns. We put in some mighty efforts in those campaigns. Last nearly two years too which was proper order.
I think it was Ross Oâ Carroll Kelly who said in jest the other night that youâd start a qualification campaign in 5th class and by the time the tournament was actually finished youâd have the Leaving Cert done. The South American qualification is a proper slog.

14 and a half months was the optimum length of a World Cup qualifying campaign. Early September after the European Nations Cup to the November of the next year.
Irelandâs 1994 campaign lasted a full 18 months from May 1992 to November 1993. Almost as long as the Zoo TV tour.
As Iâve mentioned before, a great qualifying campaign was like watching an acorn grow into a mighty oak.

Itâs a phenomenal competition. It lasts over two years.
The first matchday was September 7th, 2023. The team that advances from South America to the inter-confederation play-offs wonât be done with qualifying until the end of March 2026.
Some investment of time and effort.
Our qualifying campaign by comparison could be a measly 11 weeks.
