20x20 Women in Sport - If She Can't See It, She Can't Be It

Looks like bríd stack is OK. Not a spinal injury was her neck and she will be OK in time. Is there a lot of serious injuries in AFL?

I see the Irish women’s rugby is in meltdown because some performance director said the players had to take responsibility for not qualifying for the World Cup.
This has upset the women greatly

Women and attending sport

Sir,-– Two recent letter writers have bemoaned what they perceive to be an inequality in the coverage of women’s as opposed to men’s sport.

It is all about the numbers and the money. Newspapers, for example, now have exact figures as to the relative readership numbers for every individual article due their online presence. Articles about men’s sport simply attract far more clicks and hence ad views. They are making a rational commercial decision.

Wimbledon is a good example of “equality” in sport. Equal prize money for men and women. The same level of TV coverage. Just what your letter writers would like to see happening in all sports.

The reality is that it is deeply unequal. The men’s TV viewing figures are twice that of the women’s during the final and for a considerably longer time as they play five sets instead of three. In effect, the male players are subsidising the women.

During the normal tour events this does not happen and is reflected in the prize money and media coverage.

Men even make up the majority of attendees at many elite female sporting events. Until women start to show the same level of interest in sport as men, the numbers will not lie. Maybe, just maybe, that is their valid choice and we should just get on with life as it is. – Yours, etc,

DAVE SLATER,

Co Kildare.

Turned on Off The Ball while diving last night and they were talking about women’s 6 nations. It must be torture for the hosts having to devote so much time to such a competition. I actually havent heard any women i work with talk about women’s 6 nations.

Hardly any different to having to cover the 6 nations

One the things I remember from reading Shoot magazine when I was a nipper was Jimmy Greaves would regularly remark that women’s tennis was better to watch then men’s tennis and he wasn’t just talking about looking at frilly knickers, he was talking about the actual sport side of it. I think a lot of people would have agreed with that back then.

Tennis in a general sense has declined in public interest since then but women’s tennis has fallen off a cliff in terms of public interest.

However I’d say the biggest sports star in America in the year 2026 who has generated the biggest engagement is a woman. Possibly the two biggest actually.

Every BBC Sports Personality Of The Year between 2021 and 2024 was a woman and that’s voted for by the public.
