A new low for Israel. How low can they go?

Give them a good frowning at

Economic sanctions, I like it…

If only Gerry Ryan were still here, he could sort this out.

Israel will intercept Irish ship, say sources
Israeli sources have said they will intercept an Irish ship bound for Gaza.

Israel is offering the Irish-owned MV Rachel Corrie the option of handing over its humanitarian aid to Israeli authorities or of entering Gaza via Rafah in Egypt.

Derek Graham, from Ballina in Mayo, is on board the MV Rachel Corrie.

He says neither option is viable.

“The last time one of our ships was confiscated they said the same thing – the cement on board never went in, the reconstruction material never went in, the toys on board didn’t go in” he said.

“What they consider humanitarian aid and what we consider humanitarian aid are two different things”.

“During the war, everybody sent humanitarian aid to Rafah; none of that was ever allowed in – it sat at Rafah Crossing for months on end” he added.

I reckon Cowen getting in on the act is a signal of a changing mood in European dimplomatic circles. I struggle to see how he would be getting so brave if he didn’t have EU sentiment behind him. Martin has been consistent in his denouncements of Israeli hostilities for a long time now. An official boycott of Israeli goods is highly unlikely, but partial sanctions or expulsion of the Israeli embassy is not. For that to happen though, something similar to last attack would be required. I seriously doubt the Israelis will do that.

I think it’s a bit more serious that that Mickee.

I know you’ll play the trump card of having lived in Tel Aviv but I’d family living in Ramallah and while the hatred of Palestinians isn’t universal among Israelis, it’s a bit more widespread than you’re suggesting. Every election tells us that, and so do demonstrations like this celebration outside the Turkish embassy after the bombings:

That’s a fair point rocko and I accept it
I was thinking about this the other night a lot and TBH Tel Aviv is not called “the bubble state” for nothing.
I think it’s the sheer volume of young people there or something and there is very much a switch off and anti current affairs / religion mindset prevalent in the city, its like “ so uncool man to take politics on a night out man” kinda vibe that took me back a bit when I got there.
I agree that the rest of the country ( apart from Haifa that somehow seems to have this amazing coexistence between both side ( thanks in no small way to the football side and the work they have done) is a tense place with little or no interaction between arab and jew,
Jeruslim whilst a great place to visit does have a nasty undercurrent there that is infectious,
Living there is incredibly expensive so the “first time buyer” has no option if he wants to buy in the city on a modest salary but to locate on one of the massive “settlements”: outside the city so you can only imagine what goes on there…

Ramallah is interesting, its illegal to enter there as a jew as far as I know as its in one of the areas under the PA control, I visited a few times and the people were as always in the middle east wonderful and welcoming, I spoke english tho with my atrocious arabic as ( and I hate myself for thinking this) the risk of speaking Hebrew probably could have landed me in a spot of bother with the locals

Things were so much better I am led to believe, before the second intifada in 2000 most houses in Israel were built by palistinians who crossed at erez and keren shalom into Israel each day,
My boss’s gaff in Ashkelon was built by a father and 2 sons…

Since 2000 however with the second intifada ( the killing of 15 russian teenagers at the dolphinarium nightclub in tel aviv in 2000 was an iconic event as it showed israel TA was no longer immune), the policies of ariel sharon and what I believe was a deliberate divisive move in 2005 to forcibly disenagage jews from gush katif in gaza as he was in effect creating the division he so desired, coupled with the Hamas victory in 2006 in gaza have led us to where we are today

Mickee your full of shit.

I have a cousin who has been there on and off for years and his story is alot different to yours. And from my experience of meeting Israelis they are extremely politically aware, motivated and most are full of hate, not just for the Palestinians, but almost for the world. They are bitter to everyone almost by the time you get through a couple of nights out with them or days of work with them. Painfully so.

No doubt you met a nice bunch of people on the ordinary level (work, social etc), i don’t doubt that for a second. But the demographic you describe are about the same as the demographic i’ve met and my cousin hung out with. And your describing people from a different country and a different attitude than my experience.

Isn’t there conscription? Its in the army the hate is really cranked up, and if your talking about an 18-35 demographic then its going to be very clear in their heads what they have been told, and how they were trained.

I know there are Israelis out there who also deplore everything their army/government has done, but their voice is so weak in Israel you’d have to wonder how many there really is.

kev, i respect your opinion and what you say even if i may not necessarily agree with your feelings towards them but i resent you saying that i am full of shit.
why would i want to go and invent an opinion just for the purpose of antaganisation of others on this thread? its ridiculous.

yes, conscription is 100% and there are many ( the eduacted / wealthy who have a chance at university) who despise it and the poorer people who live in areas affected by this shit who welcome the chance at joining the army as it litrally gives them something to do of importance and may provide them with a career, obviously these people are open and vunerable to any extremism that may be present due to their background

if you study the results of the last election in 2009 you will see that the moderate kadima party led by tzipi lizni got the most votes but could not form a majority governement so that shows to me that there is a sizable proportion out there that want reform.
instead, likud formed a coalition with shas ( religous) and livermans crowd to give us the disaster we have now in the knesset

What has moderate politics done in the past, genuine question?

I honestly did not know there was that kind of will there, as in with the kadima party. it flies totally in the face of my experience. But of course my understanding of moderate could be different to theirs, or yours after living there for a while. Thats not a go at you, its simply normal to happen, especially if you liked your peers.

As with every other country with conscription there’s a massive resentment among some young Israelis to the army. You have guys guarding crossing points into Ramallah who have no desire to be there, no desire to be in the army and no desire to carry out the duties they’re ordered to do.

Turns out Israel made a bit of a fuckup with their photos of the “weapons” on the Turkish ship anyway. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs posted the photos on their Flickr site
Imgur

Turns out an awful lot of those photos are a few years old according to the meta data. Idiots.

This one is particularly funny.

Check out how retarded it all is.

“note engraved name on the handle”   cunts, they shot a young yank four times in the head and once in the chest for good measure as well [My link](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/03/furkan-dogan-us citizen-k_n_599173.html)

Christ almighty. The past week is really showing Isreal up for what it is but the sad thing about it is that there will be no actions against them. A few governments will huff and puff for another week or so and then that will be it.

That’s about it alright Runt. A minor diplomatic incident, some stern words from other governments and then everyone will revert to type in a few weeks and Israel will go on ruling their little part of the world however the fuck they want. They’ll just pick their targets more carefully in future.

If you read any history of the occupation, or of Israeli aggression in general post the six day war the same pattern repeats itself. The Israeli lobby is too powerful to be opposed in the states, and Israel remains a useful strategic partner for the US in the middle east. The EU could conceivably bring some diplomatic pressure to bear on Israel, given that it is it’s largest trading partner. Following the bloody assault on Southern Lebanon in 2006 however, the EU responded by concluding a major and favourable trade agreement with the same Israeli government.

As Rocko says, the world will ultimately do nothing. Like all colonial subjects the Palestinians can only help themselves. Expect the third intifada to be more horrific than anything we’ve seen before.

and for the Governments of the world sit back in shock and wonder how something like that could develop.

They have taken control of the Rachel Corry now.

No violence apparently.
