A serious discussion about the merits of rugby football

That’s not really anything like the tackle last night in fairness. That’s a shoulder driven into the face while yesterday was Marmion on the way down after a tackle falling into JPG shoulder who was quite passive and was stepping backwards. Another ref might have called it as red as there was contact between head and shoulder but I wouldn’t like to see that as a slam dunk red in the sport as there would be a red card in pretty much every single game if so.

Call 9 wan wan, theres been a moider in the Tuscany region.

Lovely. Were at magicland today. First day open, it’s almost deserted. Kids are loving it just waiting on an XXL burger.

If you were a true lawnster fan you’d know we were nowhere near Tuscany. Too many Brits.

I don’t see any difference at all really, surprised others do. 1.28 in that link there is the most damning, Cipriani at least had the excuse that his opponent was very low and his teammate prevented him trying to wrap in the tackle.

JGP is fully upright and his shoulder makes contact with yer man’s chin. How can it get any clearer than that? Maybe GP isn’t used to dipping to make the tackle but that’s no excuse either.

On there being a red in every single game, sure isn’t that the point of it, to remove those tackles from the game?

Don’t think they have a chance. V lightweight pack but I’d prefer to see them losing trying to play a bit of ball with Hodnett, kendellon and JOD now than playing the likes of cloete and Jenkins

Think hodnett is sensational player. Can’t wait to see how he develops. Pitty Coombes season was ended last week, but id say bigger picture he was fortunate he didn’t get a leavy scale injury

There nearly is at this stage

Correct on both counts. Intent is irrelevant. I don’t think it was malicious but it was a dangerous contact to the head

Noted anti Leinster commentator Shane Horgan calls it a straight red

I hadn’t seen this clip until now but clear a few lads here are parroting the Kearnivore

That’s shocking. What hope have they of eliminating serious head injuries from the game when referees are letting the likes of that slide?

As a matter of interest what should jgp have done differently there?

Avoid the head.

He needed to bend - instead he slightly dipped and pushed forward into the player. That’s a very dangerous tackle despite ‘intent’

Looking at it in real time I would have thought he had very little time to do that. Marmion more or less appeared in front of him. Would he have been better off stepping aside altogether?

He didn’t make any effort to get into a tackle position. He made an incorrect guess that he wouldn’t be required to make a tackle I’d say. If the only tackle you can make it an illegal dangerous one then you don’t make it

It’s like a keeper dragging down the striker who has got in behind him and has an open goal… What can he do bar drag him down to stop him? Nothing. Let him score or face the consequences

He could have made a better effort to get low there anyway if he wanted. He just decided he was gonna stay on his feet and go for the turnover assuming his teammate would have stopped him

That is certainly what the law makers want if the options as are binary as driver your shoulder into a fellas nose or let him past and tackle him from side of behind

Well you don’t twist your shoulder into contact anyway. The footage there is very conclusive. It was very dangerous - just bend into the contact.

Red card for Leicester at Clermont today. Tigers player made poor read and shot in though player didn’t have ball. They collided and collision saw their heads come together. Red.

Would have been penalty for tackle without the ball but even accidental head to head contact and he was marched. Good to see

Always good to see an ingerlander get the line.

Did them no harm. Thumped Clermont with the home leg still to come. Leicester impressive
