Hey all. Currently in Siem Reap in Cambodia and have lost my wallet with all cards in it. Got onto my bank (BOI) to cancel my card. Living here but all my money is in my Irish account. Anyone know what is easiest way to transfer money to an overseas account (or to any financial institution) that is relatively speedy and doesn’t cost fortune. Please considering it is developing country and banking system isn’t advanced at all. Next week here is public holidays which adds to my great news as all banks shut. Have sourced money to tie me over. Any help appreciated. Thanks
There is a western union in Siem Reap, well there was in 2003 anyway! Same thing happened a friend of mine after a feed of magic pizza.
No idea on costs.
You’re bank can arrange for an emergency transfer for you. Well, AIB could to Colombia after I spent half an hour being transferred between people. After that I presume you have to have new bank cards delivered to your home address so arrange for whoever’s at home to forward them on to an address you trust out there. Make sure the emergency transfer is enough to keep you going until the cards arrive.
Tough break Larry. Here’s my advice.
- Get a nutribullet shipped out there*.
- Start selling your own concoctions on the side of the road out there.
- Watch the millions roll in and fly yourself home first class.
- Have you an electrical adapter? This could unhinge my whole plan.

They offer Emergency Cash to Premier Customers (premier customers is just a badge you get offered - in fact I think this is the only tangible benefit) - if you ring them and ask them nicely they should be able to do something for you even if not a Premier Customer

Neteller, Paypal? Not sure if they could be of use in this situation but otherwise Western Union only thing I can think of. Cuntish situation, best of luck with it Raymond
Tip into Thai-land where things are better, but your bank should be able to post a new card etc out to your nearest bank in 3-5 days. Cambodia has a ton of Western Unions to tie you over. Other than that, have a nutri-bullet and a happy pizza* and you’ll feel much better.
*Not a happy experience for CM in 2005.
Sounds like you had to leave Ireland in a hurry and don’t want the money to be traceable. You weren’t a sports coach before you left were you?
@Sidney kicking a man when he is down The TFK way.
Come again?
Thanks @TheUlteriorMotive, @Lazarus, @glasagusban. Appreciated. Will get onto bank of ireland and see if they can arrange money transfer for me for when banks here reopen next week. Suspect that could prove difficult and costly.
Banks reopen next week? They should be able to identify western union branches that they can send money to from their end. It shouldn’t cost much.
Yeah open next Tuesday. Hope you’re right and thanks for the help.
If you use Western Union to transfer from a bank account in Ireland to an agent in Cambodia, it’ll cost about a fiver to transfer €1000
Yes you fucking are.
It’s all coming together KP. Cambodia is exactly where the likes of him would go as well.
Too late now for Larry but I opened a second (empty) current account for when I went off in the summer and kept the ATM card for it in my luggage, separate to my normal ATM card. If you then lose your normal ATM card you can just transfer funds via internet banking.
