Hurling finals selling out is a recent enough development. Hurling final rarely sold out in the 1970’s and 80’s. In 1973 just 58,009 bothered to turn up to see Limerick in their first final in 33 years. There was a crowd of over 73,000 at the Cork v Galway football final a few weeks later. That was fairly typical of the trend in the 70’s and 80’s.
1979 drew 53,000.
30,000 from Kilkenny! Even going for 5 in a row we never have much more than 20,000. We just don’t have the numbers for it.
Jaysus. His flakiness there for all to see. I was saying kk by 4, now I think more likely 7
There was no money in the country in those days
The IMF came in a few weeks later
We used to just drive up from Waterford on the morning of the All Ireland. We’d pay cash at the turnstile and go in on the terrace. I’m trying to think when that changed and I’d say it was 1991 for the Derry Cork football final. There was an awful crush down the front of the Canal as thousands of Derry fans came in late.
That game was all ticket it was 1993 . I think 1983 was the last pay in the terrace final .
93 Fagan
I was on the terrace and paid in for Dublin Galway in 1983.
All the nordies drunk off their heads
1984 was all ticket
Yes. 1983 Dublin v Galway football final was the last pay at the gate. Quite apart from all the ructions on the field that day, it was apparently very dangerous on the terraces with overcrowding and lucky that there wasn’t crush fatalities.
I think that day convinced Liam Mulvihill of the need to redeveloped. Croke Park .
Nally (Terrace) tickets available on Tickets.ie
I turned down 2 lower hogan earlier. Lad offering said I was the 6th person he called. You’ll get a stand ticket for 50 in the big tree on Sunday I’d say
The big tree is gone
I very much doubt it
I doubt it. Kilkenny and Tipperary types are the sort who sleep with their trousers on and their hands in their pockets
Is it? Jaysus didn’t know that. Is Gills still going?
