All-Ireland Football Championship 2022

Maybe if Armagh went on to win

But O’Neill’s equaliser does top it for pressure and difficulty. The pressure on a last gasp kick to equalise is much greater. O’Shea’s kick, and Cluxton’s for that matter, were shots to nothing.

From play so were Kevin Cassidy’s point and Joe Canning’s. They were the last plays in those matches.

O’Shea’s kick will be remembered more than O’Neill’s because Kerry won and Armagh lost. For the same reason Tony Kelly’s sideline is destined to be a footnote of history.

The points scored by Kieran Donaghy and Cillian O’Connor late in the 2011 and 2017 finals were two of the most clutch kicks ever, but because Dublin came down the other end if the field and won they are not as remembered as they would be had their teams won. O’Connor’s equaliser in 2016 is possibly the most clutch point ever scored but again destined to be a footnote because in the replay he kicked it up in the air and as wide as a fuckin’ gate.

For clutchness and overall context it’s hard to beat O’Donovan’s equaliser in hurling.

In football, Ross Carr’s equaliser for Down against Derry in 1991 has rich context woven through it given Down went on to win the All-Ireland. This elevates it far above the difficulty of the actual kick.

I agree with you on most of that actually. I thought you were saying rian O’Neill’s was more ‘iconic’.
The history behind the kick and the unbelievable pressure that comes with being a Kerry player and given the losing run they were on can’t be discounted either though.
Armagh lost v Galway and people didn’t really mind the consensus was they had a great season. If Kerry had gone on to lose yesterday in extra time given the way the game had gone the county might never have got over it.

Harry Ruddle’s winning goal is the most clutch score in GAA History.

How things are remembered largely depends on context. If the team ends up still losing obviously it won’t be as remembered.

Like, Toni Kroos scored a clutch winner for Germany against Sweden and at the time it appeared to have all the ingredients of an iconic goal. Then Germany went out a few days later and hilariously lost to South Korea, so Kroos’s goal became a footnote of history.

Barney Rock’s equalising goal against Cork in 1983 is the most iconic and most clutch Dublin score of all time. There were no ifs or buts attached to how it is remembered. It’s remembered only as the goal that dramatically saved a season and paved the path to Dublin’s most storied and glorious All-Ireland of all.

And it denied TJ Reid’s goal in the semi-final of iconic status.

Rob Hennelly against the Dubs last year has to be included, far more pressure than O’Sheas yesterday and added drama too.

Don’t be giving Davy credit for Damien Fitzhenry’s heroics!

In Inter County GAA, i cant imagine there being anything more special than kicking the winning score into Hill 16 with the last kick of the game to knock Dublin out of the Championship.

David Clifford not even the best player in the Kerry forwards and he gets nominated for player of the week? Who does that gaa player of the week nominations? Alan Milton’s child or what!?

Harry Ruddle for Ballygunner vs Ballyhale is probably the best one I’ve ever seen. Not intercounty, but top class.

Darby’s goal will never be topped. Kerry going for 5 in a row, the speculative delivery the nudge, the outrageous shot and the roaster jig of celebration. ‘There was a goal in this game’ screams Micheal! Tremendous stuff.

No wonder your car is in shite

The iconic nature of it is proven by the fact that rustic muldoons are able to recognise the butty wee fucker 40 years later and it’s the 1st thought that comes into their heads.
