Cascarino strolls up “against this fella” as per Hamilton. Hits the onion bag
Timofte against Bonnar.
Bonnar faces Timoftei…YEP.
David O’Leary of Arsenal…the nation holds it’s breath. YES WE’RE THERE
Is it true George was shafted for Jimmy Magee for the Quarter Final against Italy?
He was. And again in 94 too against the Dutch. We were convinced as kids that Ireland couldn’t win if Jimmy was commentating.
Watched Galway Tipp 2015 there. One of the really great games that gets overlooked a bit. I’m not sure how Tessio stayed looking at Mannion on Callanan for so long. He had 1-4 from play and had missed three other chances after about 20 minutes.
James Barry was a fine full back for those few years. Tipp were actually decent in the first half, Galway were brilliant bar P Mannion and got a point back nearly straight away after each goal. Andy Smyth and David Burke particularly were brilliant in midfield. Johnny Coen was a far better corner back too. Was this Joe Canning’s first game on the half forward line? He was good too. Shane Bourke for Jason Forde, who wasn’t doing too badly at half time was a horrendous switch.
Looking back if Tipp had everyone fit it could have been the best team they ever had. Lar and Conor O’Mahoney came on and looked sharp, Noel McGrath obviously, I think John McGrath had a good league that year and then got injured, Mickey Cahill out as well
Think 15 was the best of the three Galway v Tipp semis and they were all great.
Was it Shane Bourke was subbed again for Noel McGrath near the end?
Lar missed a great goal chance too.
The 2016 game was a very tense affair. Defences on top for the most part. What’s that lad that scored the winner in 2015 at now?
I think it was, Hanbury eat him alive while he was on. In fairness, Lar made that chance by reading the break brilliantly and he connected very well, it was just a great save
Tipp had an attacking sideline with time up and level and still fucked it up.
Was it Padraic Maher threw the hurley at Shane Moloney for the winning point?
I think that was his last game at centre back.
Watched the 2009 league final today. Had forgotten how good a match that was, even with the stupid rule that if you got a yellow you had to go off, with a replacement allowed on. The black card didn’t last long, thankfully.
Fast Eddie was lucky he didn’t get a straight red for a shoulder to the head of Curran.
Webster was full forward and posed a few problems for JJ, through awkwardness as much as anything. When was he discarded? His lack of hurling stood out relative to those around him but he had his uses.
Yeah 16 was probably the worst of the three but still compelling as it was so tight. Shane Maloney was dropped from the squad only a few months ago.
Actually it was March last year.
A great game. There was some tension in the stand. Auld lads were nearly killing each other when Tommy Walsh threw a Hurley at John O’Brien.
Eddie Brennans point at the end from about 100 yards was some sickener.
That game really found fellas out. I don’t think James Ryall ever played for Kilkenny again much after that.
Brennan was brilliant in extra time and proved to be the difference. Set up one point with a ridiculous run and then scored one himself from miles out.
Yeah, the crowd went mad when Walsh threw the hurley!
I think John O’Brien was a seriously under rated player. Some paw on him and fine finisher.
It was the first time in ages Tipp and Kilkenny were at the same level.
There was a real edge to it. Auld lads from Tullaroan and these places probably still bitter about 1964.
2015 remains one of my all time favourite games.
As compelling a drama as you will ever see. With Seamie pretty much unplayable until Hanbury did a WWE style smackdown on him. Galway nearly lost despite being the better side for most of the game.
I often look back on that game and look at the respective performances of Jason Flynn and Cathal Mannion. Both were excellent that day and took some fine scores. In the years since Cathal Mannion has turned into a Rolls Royce of a hurler and is now indispensable to Galway. Unfortunately Flynn’s career has not gone the same way. Has all the ability in the world but still looks hesitant and unsure of himself when the ball comes in to him. It’s a shame because to use a racing parlance he could be anything.
Going down the stretch, Lar’s wonder score in 2010 against us was on my mind. I nearly fell off the front of the upper Cusack when Shane Maloney scored that winner. Why we love sport, sheer ecstasy to finally win a tight one.
My cousin played under him when he was with Galway. He dropped him before one match in the pre match huddle.
That might have been the infamous Clare v Galway game down in Ennis when Loughnane was over Galway. There was one Galway team named in the match programme, a different team announced over the tannoy before the throw in and yet another different team that actually took the pitch. The only people more confused than the spectators in Cusack park were the Galway players themselves.
