Itās heading to a complete split between club and county in the not too distant future in my opinion. Be a total sickener for rural clubs in particular where the local club is the heartbeat but they only see their county lads for 3 or 4 games anyway. I was speaking to a senior club manager last week who told me he hopes the county are knocked out soon so the club can play championship . Sad situation when you hope your own county is beaten but I couldnāt disagree with him.
Is it not? In my experience top school teams will train more than college teams and those players are probably playing more games than college lads overall with the amount of teams theyād be on
If there wasnāt a ridiculous double league format we have at the moment of course they could. You then have a heap of clubs in September, October and November. Of course played under lights and at ridiculous times. Premier league soccer teams go back training in late June for games in August. 8 week pre season for the most part. Currently youāve an inter county teams go back in January at the latest for a championship game in May. Minimum of 12 weeks training and essentially playing meaningless friendlies. They then play 75 percent of the games in 5 weeks. It makes no sense.
I donāt get the whinge about no summer games for club players. There are club leagues right through the summer in nearly every county just not any championship matches. So plenty of matches for club players. The reality is most clubs donāt want to hear about championship during the summer. Players will head away for the summer, J1s, concerts , holidays etc leaving a decimated club team. They are heading to all these places irrespective. very few want to admit the above is the reality , easier to whine about scheduling
Thereās a number of reasons for it but Iād love to know the percentage of lads in college that played championship this summer compared to even five years ago. Very difficult to hold down full time jobs and play for a long period of time. Thereāll be exceptions but Iād say the inter county career will mostly be finished by 30 soon.
Back in my own club playing days, club championship was only ever really played off from late August to early October. That was largely down to the younger lads going off on J1ās and traveling during the summer months.
Senior club championships could be cut in number. In limerick 4 teams have a chance, Waterford is a 1 way street, tipp 4 maybe, cork standard gone way back, 8 teams maybe considering the size of the county, Clare probably most competitive club Championship in munster. 8 should be the maximum of any senior club championship. 2 groups of 4.
A lot of clubs are in real bother in limerick the current success of the senior team is papering over a lot of cracks . At underage Kilmallock , the well , Adare are really struggling . Na P have peaked and currently it is debatable if monaleen and Mungret will up it . The club situation needs to be addressed .
There is absolutely no way that intercounty managers will allow the club championships run concurrently, bar maybe the odd game or two as beforeā¦ But that just meant shoving a load of games into a short space of time for the clubs (which is 99% of the players).
Intercounty managers want more access to players if anything.
I actually think the current system is as good as itās going to get tbh. I wouldnāt change it.
Take the power away from inter county managers who are for the most part spoofers. Clubs are released for clubs for 8 days post championship. Hump it or lump it. Fine the fuck out of any county board that doesnāt enforce it. They wonāt be long falling into place then. It should also be noted inter county managers are powerless and to my knowledge have no representation in croke park or in any of the councils.
