All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 2016 You Are What You Eat

Mayo players don’t bother trying to tackle the ball and referees give them immunity to do so.

You mean to not do so?

No. I don’t.

I think the weather will have a huge bearing on the replay. That shit weather really is a leveller. Given that Dublin have way more room to improve than mayo I’d say Dublin should win the replay comfortably.

Your sentence doesn’t make sense so.

Exhibit B.

Seething.

The way Dublin were written up as certainties before yesterday was hilarious. Some of that clearly got through to the the team and it showed in a complacent attitude. All the talk was that Jim Gavin would have them prepared mentally and they’d be ruthless. Were they fuck. Clear signs of terminal decline there in several players such as Flynn, Brogan and McAuley. It was Dublin’s younger players such as Byrne, Small,Fenton and Kilkenny who saved them yesterday.

Cillian O’Connor had a terrific game - he isn’t one of the five or ten best forwards in the game in terms of ability but he is clutch.

Eddie Kinsella to ref the replay?

Flynn seems to have sacred cow status in Jim Gavin’s mind. He has not played a good game in 2 years, yet was only taken off in injury tome yesterday. He is obviously struggling with injury but I am surprised at Gavin’s lack of ruthlessness here.

I’d also wonder why Jack McCaffrey has not been brought back into the panel. He is back in Dublin since mid August. I’d prefer him as an impact sub to Darren Daly.

Flynn is extremely worrying. He hasn’t played like himself all summer. I think brogan had it tough yesterday and spent a fair bit of time particularly in the first half winning ball and laying it off because that’s all he could do. His shooting was appalling though.

I heard Maurice.

Thats the crux of it. Dubs not used to that.

First 10 mins will be very interesting next day. If Mayo soak it up again you’d nearly fancy them. Brogan and Flynns form are patterns now. They need more from both. Think Connolly is doing fine, he just has a very difficult opponent who has his measure athletically.
I think Midfield is a bigger worry. MDM is not the same man and Bastick is hardly a 70 min player. Fenton is a class act but cannot do it alone.

Think Mayo need to get their 50/55 mins of hard work out of Seamie Shea and pull him before he causes too much damage with wayward kicking and decision making. The mistakes come at the same time every game. He clearly is not up to more time on the field and the head goes.

Vaughan had a great game and Mayo may have tye edge there overall.

He kicked that point on his thirteenth step.

Gavin is a good manager. But he has been blessed with an excellent bunch of players. Dublin failed to show up yesterday. Management have to take blame for that. Players for whatever reason were not prepared and failed to perform.

I think the replay and how Dublin respond will determine Gavin’s legacy as a manager.

Flynn plays the defensive positioning very well. Managers will often value that above other aspects. They may not have a replacement for that.

Flynn should be dropped but he wont be. The changes I see Gavin making for the replay are starting Andrews instead of Macmanaman and maybe Bastick for McAuley. The only reason for this is the impact Macmanaman and McAuley can have coming off the bench.

Even though McCaffery is back since August he would be nowhere fit enough to come back into the panel. I actually think we are missing him more that O’Carroll at the moment.

Ref had hand up did he not (i know thats not a correct application of the rules) to give a free regardless.

You are right, but f he had been brought back in mid August like he should have been he would be plenty fit now.

I think Andrews and Mannion will start in the replay. One of Brogan and Flynn, probably Brogan, will be dropped and McManamon will also lose out.

Ultimately I think McManamon coming on as a sub will benefit Dublin but he doesn’t deserve to be dropped based on yesterday’s performances and didn’t deserve to be taken off when he was - no Dublin starting forward had a good game but McManamon was certainly less bad than Flynn or Brogan.
