I think Lyons was cognisant of how Tyler missed a lot of the pulling and dragging in the semi so had another pair of eyes helping him. It was mentioned that Tyler addressed Cleary after HT and said that he’d been informed he was holding Hego all first half.

It’s an impossible sport to referee, every outfit are coached to commit ‘half-fouls’. There is no such thing as a half-foul though, either it’s a legitimate tackle or a foul. Football was allowed drift along for years and it was ok because it’s played across the country, if hurling is left drift they will be able move the final to Thurles permanently.

I agree it’s very hard to ref. I think calling steps would make a huge difference.
A big one this season is forwards backing into defenders to initiate contact and getting frees for it. It’s hard enough to defend in hurling and I feel this is very unfair. I’d like to see frees blown against the forward for initiating the contact in these scenarios.
The Clare game was hardly the first time a lot of pulling and dragging off the ball was missed by the referee. BBC had a player cam on Hegarty all game Sunday that you could watch, if anyone figures out a way of finding that I’d be interested in watching it for 20 minutes.

He missed a few very obvious clips on Rabbitte’s heels midway through the first-half. Although Galway ended up with one of those frees in a more central position anyway when Byrnes overcarried. 0-5 from play from the starting team and another 0-2 off the bench was some paucity of scores from play from Galway.
It’s a game that will forever be known as the Adam English final.
