All Ireland U21 Football Championship

5 of yesterday’s team started the 2011 AI Final, Jason Lonergan came on in the 2nd half.

John McGrath and Philip Quirke who are injured also played in 2011.

Not that simplistic at all. I’d imagine it has more to do with lads who are playing senior and split loyalties between the two squads which would not have been an issue when they were minors. Injuries also seem to be an issue in that grade as well, from a Tyrone perspective - McNabb, Coney and O’Neill were all blighted by injuries when they stepped out of the minor grade and have only really managed to stay injury free the past 18 months or so.

U21 is knockout too so adds an element of luck to it. A team can lose a provincial first round by a point or two and people completely discount them as being any good.

True. Minor has a back door, allowing Laois to come back and win the All Ireland after losing to Dublin in 03 in Leinster Final. That team lost U21 All Ireland in 06 or so to a flukey Colm O Neill goal.

@Nembo Kid - how would those stats look if you didn’t have a straight 3 year follow on line, like with Tipp this year?
2015 - Tipp/Tyrone 2012 - Dublin
2014 - Dublin - 2011 Tipperary
2013 - Galway 2010 - Tyrone
2012 - Dublin 2009 - Armagh
2011 - Galway 2008 - Tyrone
2010 - Dublin 2007 - Galway
2009 - Galway 2006 - Roscommon
2008 - Kerry 2005 - Down
2007 - Cork 2004 - Tyrone
2006 - Mayo 2003 - Laois
2005 - Galway 2002 - Derry
2004 - Armagh 2001 - Tyrone

Interesting that none of the respective minor winners of the same age bracket have won the U21 in the past 12 years. Tyrone were the last team to do this with a minor title in 98 and success in 2001 in the u21. Also interesting that it’s back to 2004 since an Ulster side last won an u21 title, yet they have had big success in the minor age bracket at the same time - winning 7 of the 12 minor titles in that time period.
Galway didnt win in 2009. You might be seething when you see who did.

I think you’ve misread that

Cork won Under 21 All Ireland in 2009.

They robbed Tipp with a flukey last minute goal in Munster Final that year to win by a point.

How so?

?? Midfield is where SOB plays.

@Mac you ignorant fucker, not even an informative rating for answering your query.

They do, but that isn’t the reason. Between minor and u21 is, in my opinion at least, by and large the biggest sea change in life for a lot of people, as you are thrown out of the nest and into the world. They are hugely changing, challenging and formative years, where you go from worrying about exams and sport, to worrying about a whole heap of things.
It is only the lucky ones that can keep sport front and centre, and, indeed, stay at home to do so.
I wonder if the succession rate was higher in the tiger years when local employment was easier to come by?

I’m on the App. Thanks for your answer mate.

looked like he was playing across half forward the last day, although I have only seen highlights of MF and bits of Saturday live

Definitely played midfield, I only caught the second half though.

Nah it’s the sauce. And the girls. The girls love the sauce too.

Played midfield.

You seem awfully sure for a man who watched the game.

Conditions in Parnell Park are absolutely treacherous. The pitch is almost unplayable.

I’d throw McGeary straight in against Donegal.
