All Ireland Under 21 Hurling Championship - 2014

There should be no referees in hurling, just throw in the ball and let them at it.

Johnny Ryan.

Catherine Street?

Surprise surprise, the idiot doesn’t rate exam preparation.

It depends on what the lad wants to do after school. If he is aiming for high points he probably shouldn’t play but if he doesn’t need points there is no harm in him playing

No you see there is every harm in him playing a contact sport as he’s doing the most important exams of his young life. He’s another 3 years U21 if it means that much. Look, each to their own, I just find it odd that anyone of his parents, him or his management are allowing it.

@twiceasnice97 failed his room entering exam many moons ago and his career has been blighted ever since.

John Street. He’ll be looking out for the Clare goalkeeper illegally cleaning the ball.

i did enough of the fcuking things but yes you are correct i never worried too much about them

Cian Lynch wont need much of a Leaving Cert. Thats the simple fact of it. The lad will be welcomed with open arms on a scholarship into LIT. In fact i would say all that is already well sorted out at this stage, course and all picked. Whoever says hurling will get you nowhere doesn’t know what they are on about. If you are up in the elite end of things, it will get you everywhere. Fact.

You are right to an extent. Howeve these days all it is, is an oppurtunity. They have to make the most if it themselves, no easy rides anymore as has been shown recently with a few high profile players. LIT and DCU and the likes are being watched like a hawk by the university powers that be. And it’s the GAA 3rd level board are the most watchful.
However it is will still have to attain some sort of score for the course he is entering.

Fucking madness.[/QUOTE]
For once I agree with you MBB. Whether it’s out out respect for his uncle & coach Ciarán, nobody knows. The other LC students aren’t playing, and while Nash, La Touche Cosgrave, etc will be big losses, you get the feeling that they at least have their priorities in order.

On paper it should be Clare tomorrow night, that forward line of theirs is scarily good. I don’t think we’ll be too far off them though. Jack Ahern and David Reidy are big losses in the forwards. Nothing we can do about the absence of the LC students.

Most of all it’s an important game for Carey. A win over the AI favourites and his & Tom Ryan’s credibility will sky rocket.

The leaving cert had a far too high a standing In Irish education. Tests are important but this huge mess at the end if your school life is the problem.

Point is it shouldn’t be an issue, it shouldn’t be a big deal. There are far bigger tests in life than the LC and the sooner we start educating that way the better.

It’s a difficult one though as things are now the LC is a big deal for these lads. But of course anyone with a bit of sense realises it could be a welcome distraction too. One of the biggest mistakes made by irish parents is stopping their kids being active a month before the leaving an locking them in the house, it’s so stupid an ignorant it’s hardly worth discussing. However playing county hurling is a pressure as well, so it is a difficult one. The parents will know him best and it may well be that the effect of missing out on playing for his county would be detrimental to his mental state and this affect his exams negatively. Anyone who does not understand this is a buffoon.
As for the physical side, injuries etc, the chances of getting injured are actually quite low. It’s a sport he has played all his life and these are well conditioned and well looked after young lads. Even if he did get hurt, what’s the big deal? Is there not a system for injured people to take exams orally? Or take a specially changed exam (the back up one?) in August or something? Worst case scenario is he repeats. Not ideal, but not the en of the world either. Let the young lad live for fuck sake.

SHANE O’DONNELL IS ‘pretty cheesed off’ at missing out on Clare’s opening game tonight in the Bord Gáis Energy Munster U21 hurling championship.
Last year’s All-Ireland senior final scoring hero will watch on due to a hamstring injury as the Banner take on Limerick tonight at the Gaelic Grounds. He is also likely to miss the Clare senior side’s Munster semi-final on June 15th.
“He was pretty cheesed off,” admits Clare U21 joint-manager Gerry O’Connor. “It’s disappointing for him to miss out. But he’s been around us for the past week and a half. He’s more positive now and is working very diligently with the physios. But I can’t see him recovering in time for the senior semi-final.”
Hamstring injuries have also ruled Alan O’Neill and Cathal O’Connell, U21 starters last year, and emerging prospect Niall Deasy out of Clare’s plans. In addition attacker Peter Duggan has been battling illness.
“Peter has a virus,” revealed O’Connor. “He didn’t play in the first round of the Clare championship. He was up in Galway clinic on the Monday morning with suspected glandular fever.
“It’s not that now and the indications are that he’ll be fine. He’s pencilled in to start but we’ll have to see how he is after we do our warm up in Cusack Park before heading to the Gaelic Grounds.
“We’re left with only five players from last year’s starting team that won the All-Ireland. But we’ve a very strong panel. Those guys have been chomping at a bit, to be playing in a match of this proportion. It represents a huge opportunity for guys. This is what it’s all about. U21 is a developmental phase for them.”
O’Connor is wary of their opponents tonight.
“Limreick will have got a boost from their senior’s winning last Sunday while Ardscoil Rís are dominant in underage schools hurling. The reality is at U21 level, it’s just so competitive.
“Look at last year, Kilkenny were raging hot favourites before losing to Wexford and then Antrim overturned Wexford. We have a number of players untried and untested at U21 level. The cauldron that is the Gaelic Grounds is a pretty intense place. There’ll be a big crowd there but we’re looking forward to it.”

“Cheesed off”. I’d say Cheddar was well cheesed off last Sunday.
