Tipp got two frees in the whole game And Davy complaining about the decision for the goal
conor McDonald was very disappointing there.
5-17 from play. Ridiculous firepower.
I enjoyed that game immensely despite us ending up with a heavy beating in the end.
I donāt think it was a āsweeper systemā malfunction even though we conceded 5 goals. A horrible individual error by James Breen for the first when out way in front to claim the ball and then he seemed to be the victim of a quasi assault / rape when in possession ahead of their second.
I think McDonald missed a free from midfield at 2-12 to 0-16 after 56 minutes and they absolutely blitzed us after that. Our performance up to that point was quite good - the effort and quality of hurling was decent for large parts but we did make some poor decisions on the ball and cough up scores from loose / sloppy errors.
I thought Chin did excellently when moved to midfield in the second half and young Damien Reck was a revelation for us on Noel McGrath until he was forced off. But as Gerry Forde just said on South East Radio, āTippās ability to get crucial goals was crucial.ā Theyāre a class team and a joy to watch when they click.
We probably learned a fair bit about players today and thereāll potentially be 3 or 4 personnel changes for the championship.
Davy Fitzgerald is box office.
@myboyblue, that hand on heart thing for the national anthem was something both teams did to raise awareness to there being no 24-hour cardiac facility in the south east. The PA man asked patrons to join in with them.
dont think Iād call that any sense of knocking Wexford back to reality. Itās not as if we were going around thinking weād win or betting that we would. Iād prefer to lose to the best team around whilst being competitive right up to the 55th minute or so rather than losing to a team from our division in our home ground by a similar margin without ever looking like being in the game.
some big things to learn from Wexfords point of view though. If we are playing a sweeper, launching big long puck outs to their spare man is a waste of time. Tipp for the most part used their puck outs to hit their spare man. I cant recall us once doing the same thing. If we are playing a sweeper, conceding 5 goals is really poor. Acknowledge the fact that Tipp exploited it perfectly, as they have done previously to similar Davy/Derek McGrath teams. It was nothing new to them, and they had an exceptional game plan where they didnt really have to make a huge effort. Tipp were very physical and tough early, and it was similar to the KK team where they would go out to set a marker. Our lads reacted reasonably well to this, but the physical exertion took its toll late on when marking became very loose and concentration lacked. If they are going to be getting back to the top, we cant be as wasteful as we were. A few shots dropping short, a multitude of shots/passes were blocked, silly skill errors that will be punished by better teams.
Iām not massively despondent after that. We showed well for the most part whilst also knowing really that Tipp had that bit extra. Weāre a long way off their pace right now, but small steps, and a few have already been gained. I always said, that the potential Kilkenny game in Wexford park was what I really wanted to gauge the season on.
Terrible to think but great to hear
Ooooft
Thatās a tae in your mug paragraph there alright
You donāt know whether youāre coming or going these days Joe. Limerick are the best thing since sliced bread one minute, and theyāre not fit to wash themselves the next.
The mind games arenāt suiting you.
Cracking Davy Fitz interview on South East Radio now with Liam Spratt while heās clearly eating a sandwich. James Breen was ā100% fouledā for the second goal but thatās not why he went into the pitch. Why did you go in, Davy? āNot telling you.ā
He answered it in the TG4 post-match interview Heād do it again too, no bother to him
any link
Tipp were rode sideways in the second half. What was brendan maher booked for? Wexford look fit, good touch, hell bent on short passing all day but they dont have the forwards (cc @Mac) tipp obviously were worried wexford had something about them so put out a strong team, got a soft goal which helped, but when they decided to push on they won at total ease. Same old davy set up thats never bothered them before and wont again. I didnāt wake up for the galway game, and doubt its worth the hassle of watching now.
cc @Bandage
That was all very disappointing.
For me the most annoying things were how we dealt with their puck outs and our own puck outs
Tipp use the spare man to deal with the sweeper tactic. Play it short to ultimately by pass the sweeper or start a move that takes the sweeper out of the play. And whether through lack of a tactic or lack of work rate (a bit of both I think) we managed to give them a lot of joy on their own puck out.
And we seemed to be clueless in the second half when we had the breeze. Ball after ball seemed to come straight back.
The other old chestnuts - we need a top class free taker. The free to go level was a gimme for the likes of Canning or normally Callinan and we missed it and within seconds were 4 points down.
Still canāt be sure any of our lads will catch, pick up or control a ball first time.
Our shooting at times is nuts.
A few very Wexfordy soloes into trouble as well.
I donāt think Iāve ever seen that Tipp team in the flesh before and I didnāt like them within 5 minutes. P Maher likes to think heās Billy Big Biscuits and was disappointed someone didnāt do a number on him. Cathal Barrett made a show of himself trying to win frees a couple of times in the first half.
Their forwards are superb at winning ball though. High or low it makes no odds.
They didnāt āup itā at any time - itās just the way the game panned out. They were out to bury us from the word go.
Kirwan is a very annoying referee.
Our most reliable free taker is on the bench.
I didnāt wake up for the galway game, and doubt its worth the hassle of watching now.
Avoid like the plague.
