I think Joyce is massively under achieving with that panel. His brilliance as a player has bought him way more time than he deserves as a manager
Fully agreed, Binky. Joyce was a great man to deliver on the big day as a player but his teams have failed to do so thus far and I think their chance has gone tbh. Theyâre still far too ponderous in possession and just donât seem to want to go for the jugular at times. Also, Galway were a fairly solid outfit defensively up to 2025 but I think they have struggled defensively since the new rules came in.
In fairness he has brought them to two All-Ireland finals and won 4 Connaught titles in a row. Galway had been at a fairly low ebb for years before his arrival bar a league final appearance and All-Ireland semi-final against Dublin in 2018 where they were well beaten. Itâs not as if Galway had been cleaning up everything at underage bar that U20 title in 2020 against the Dubs and a minor against Mayo a few years ago.
But when you look at the depth of their panel itâs unreal. Regularly without Walsh, Comer and Kelly in recent years and having players like Matthew Thompson and Mulhearne to slot in instead. This McDonagh fella in corner-forward seems to be the next cab off the rank. PJ is like the GAA version of Zidane who isnât overly tactically astute but manages to get by on aura. Really he shouldâve stepped away a year or two ago but Iâd imagine thereâs an ego there where he wants to be the man who drags Galway football back to the summit. This is surely his last year if they donât do it.
Unbelievably Mayo will win an All Ireland before Joyceâs Galway
The sad thing about Joyce is, heâd have won a few if the proper rules were in place instead of the shit we had to endure during the wasteland years.
Heâs also gotten unlucky with the bayshts injuries
Youâd have to think Roscommon would be before both after their 10 point win over the dubs .
Kobe turning it on again today. Must be some honour for Armagh aupoorters to watch such free spirit playing the game
Ross McQuillan is some man to tap a goal chance over the bar. I understand the temptation to stat pad and keep things ticking over surely youâve got to go for the jugular in those games against Galway and Mayo.
Meath had no issues going for Kildare jugular. Derry same with Cork.
The stooks in the county board gave him a contract until the end of 2028.
Tbf contracts donât matter much in GAA
Indeed but hes not going to walk away and the country board aint going to sack him.
I wouldnt rule either out.
great footballer
all ireland winner
good manager
his time has passed, the players are not delivering, they wont die for him
the pep meet and greet was worrisome - shark jumped
Id put him in the same management bracket as Roy Keane. He believes all the players hes managing arent fit to lace his boots as a player (hes right in most cases).
Hence the PJ14 runners and on the pitch kicking 2 pointers in Croker before Meath last year. âLook at what i can still do in my late 40s and you young lads cant do itâ.
Heâd have been better served going through final preparations with the team who subsequently started the game woefully and were beaten.
denigrates rather than encourages - does not work in 2026
I couldnât believe it when I saw him in Kildare Village a couple of weeks back. They donât do monogrammed gear up there afaik.
A disgruntled Galway supporter mused to me last year that the only head in Galway bigger than Joyceâs was Slyne Head. What could I say!!
