Almost 25% of Irish are obese

Spot on my ideal weight and excellent conditioning. Whilst my genes and Clare heritage undoubtedly plays its part, gym and indoor footie also helps.

like so? ? ?

No nowhere near even a bit overweight.

I’m 6 foot tall and up until about 6months ago I was barely 10 stone which was technically underwight as I had a BMI of 19.5. 11 stone on the button now and still a skinny bastard. Have a small bit of a belly though which I dont mind.

Eat like a horse and wouldn’t do too much excercise bar the half hour walk to and from work everyday.

No one in my extended family ever had weight problems so its probably a hereditary thing too.

Your a sick sick man

I would be in the 25%.
I’m a very broad build. Quite tall as well.

I played a lot of sport when I was younger.
Soccer, hurling and rugby all at the same time.
Gave it all up at once.
Looking back it was a big mistake.

Did nothing for a few years and all of sudden I was pretty overweight.

I got back playing astro soccer and going to the gym.
Have injured my knee 3 times in the last year playing soccer.

It’s a horribly vicious circle to get into when you are trying to play sports and exercise at the gym to lose weight and hurt yourself in the process. Even if I watch what I eat when I’m injured I’ll still put on weight.

I’m sticking to just the gym at the moment. It’s very dull but it has to be done. I’d love nothing more than to be playing hurling and soccer the whole time but I don’t have the fitness(not a big issue) or the confidence in my knee(massive issue) to do it.

I went out training with a hurling club in Dublin for a short while. It was all do 10 laps and do 6 more. Not my idea of hurling.
There are a million drills you could be doing while getting fit at the same time.
I could do the laps myself in the gym…
It put me off it.

I feel your pain.
I hurled with Crokes years ago and it was a nightmare. I was injured all the time. Indoor soccer for anyone over 34 is going to cause problems. I don’t see it as a good way to get fit.
Cycling is another of my pet hates. I think it’s worse than useless.
Squash was good for a few years but I started looking like a mummy by the end of it. I woudl spend 10 minutes stretching and then 10 more putting on elbow and knee and wrist supports so I ran like the tin man.
Swimming, push-ups, normal food and a bit of scooby doo by moonlight (no more than 5 minutes a go) is more than adequate.

GSH,

I was expecting your usual ā€˜I’ve done worse etc’ to the above picture!!

Yours in taking the piss,
Gman.

I have said it here before, start doing weights and the pounds will drop off (provided you are eating properly of course). You can jog and cycle all you want but once you stop the activity you pretty much stop burning calories, with weights it can last up to 72 hours! And i am not on about overly heavy lifting either. Once you get over 30 you lose something like 5% of your muscle mass per decade which makes doing the simple little things harder as you grow older and slows down your metabolism which means weight gain!! doing weights twice a week combats all this and a whole lot more. A large proportion of the male body is made up of muscle, if this is being worked out regularly then you are burning serious calories. Add in cardio twice a week and you are flying it.

CM do you not have to know what you are doing in terms of technique etc to get the best out of weights…I know a lad that was doing it for the bones of 18 months and said he saw little or no diference in his fitness/physique then he did some course/seminar on it one weekend and said he really noticed the difference in the space of a few weeks

For someone starting out on weights what would you suggest?

Start off with the heaviest thing you can find and work your way down until you find something you can just about lift. Then lift it as many times as you can until your arms are too tired or until Bandage yells at you to put him down.

Repeat daily.

What if I dont have a Bandage to yell at me?

Yeah i guess you do. Its all about trial and error really and finding whats good for you. Most guys are the same when they start and are working a little of this and a little of that, and usually everyday of the week which is more harmful then good. Personally i always asked the more experienced guys about techniques and what i should and should not be doing. Most guys would not ask and think building biceps is enough but you cant beat experience! It all depends what you are working out for too, building muscle, strentgh, fitness etc.

But there are basic techniques that anyone can do without having to be too caught up in the technical side of it. Pull ups, any squating movement or anything that is working the quads will burn serious calories. Like i said it’s all about what you are training for, lads like your self (playing hurling/soccer) dont need to go overly heavy and focus on differnt things to lads looking to build muscle.

But the most important part is rest and food. Muscle does not grow when it is being worked out but when its resting.Idealy you should not work the same area again for five to seven days, but things like lunges and squats can be done a bit more reagular. And of course food is self explanatory,it’s about getting the right mix of carbs and protien. Supplements can be taken but I dont bother, I just eat right.

Of course the more you know the better off and more progressive your triaining will be but ask the gym supervisors, guys that know what they are at in the gym and a bit of personal reading and you should be good.

A cluaindiuic will do.

i doubt i’m in the obese category.

long runs at the weekend are the only way i know to really lose weight, went down about 2 kilos in the run-in to the marathon, while munching all the carbs i could get my hands on.

anything over 5 miles, even at a slow pace is good (i think the slower the pace, the higher the rate of calorie burn for some reason)

As I see ChocolateMice has mentioned suppliments does anybody on here take them…A lad I know went to some coaching workshop in L.I.T last year and they had the IRFU dietician at it and she said that only elite athletes should be taken them and that they would have little or no affect on a club player at any sport…

Does anyone take that berocca stuff also lads is it any good…My sleeping has gone to fuck over the past year and I coud do with a bit of an energy boost in the morning and around 6.30/7 p.m…

thats right…it has to do with your heart rate…if you can keep it below a certain level the body burns fat to produce enegy whiule once it goes over a certain point the body burns carbohydrates to produce energy, so if lads are looking to lose weight then long walks are better than jogging or ruinning…

You should be able to achieve this easily enough. Just give a few of your mates an early morning buzz on their mobiles and say the following in a boastful tone:

ā€˜Man, I’m feeling so energetic today.’

Over-dosed on the shit climbing Kilimanjaro last christmas and I can’t stand the sight of it since. I picked up a stomach bug from the water on the mountain and I always associate berocca with the dose of the shits I got.
