Dan Shanahan went up a lot in my estimation yesterday. I saw him going around to the Galway lads congratulating them when he was clearly hurting.
I found out that later on during one his interviews, Tony Keadyâs family passed by. Dan stopped the interview to speak to them.
Afterwards he said: "Letâs be honest, they lost a husband and a father, a pure and utter gentleman, one of the great Galway stars and that man wonât get up in the morning.
âOur lads will all get up in the morning. Tony was looking down on them today and I have no doubt they did it for Tony.â
Geroid McInerney was the poster boy this year but Cooney was the one who improved the most for me. Thought he was a good hurler but was wanting for pace & workrate.
By fuck did he prove me wrong this year, came on a tonne & really put in a shift yesterday.
Youâd literally need to have no heart to respond emotionally to that picture. I can be a hard cunt with zero empathy to most of lifeâs events, but fuck me. That picture is the essence of love
The ability of the Irish male to connect with his father is a difficult one, as no doubt many of us can attest to. From my own experience, sport has always been that one bridge we could both come half way across. That picture breaks me for that very reason. No words are needed in that moment, a tsunami of emotion conveyed with just an embrace, with just a look.
