So what if somebody is a psychopath. JFK was one. Lots of surgeons are. Fallon himself says he is one.
Ability to shoot over 600 people in under 40 minutes is a direct consequence of gun laws in America. You may say itās a price you are willing to pay but arguing it makes no difference to gun crime is just daft. Laws and rules were changed after two planes flew into WTC. Using your logic there would be no need to do that if all pilots were brain scanned.
Is Brazil the social and economic equivalent of the US? In what other field would the US say, well they tried this in Brazil and it didnāt work, so we are wasting our time with it?
I am in favor of stricter gun laws. My argument is there is a lot more involved in gun violence and murder rates in general than gun laws, and the facts bear that out.
I am not arguing that gun laws are not needed, I am pointing out there is much more to consider than gun laws.
Why do black people kill each other at a rate 8X that of white people? Is it because of lax gun laws?
The question is how do you stop mass killings. I have already said I am in favor of banning the sale of all semi automatic weapons (which can be converted to automatic) and getting automatic weapons off the streets. Easier said than done, however, as most are in the hands of criminals.
The sad reality is once a psychopath decides to embark on a mass killing, they are very difficult to stop. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and didnāt use a gun. How well did the gun laws in Norway work in stopping Breivik? The killings in Nice?
It weakens the other sideās argument when they say yeah gun laws butā¦there is no but. Tackle the idiotic gun laws. Change them immediately. Declare an amnesty. Get as many guns off the street as possible. Then set punishments for those who donāt give them up. Then set about trying to fix the other, far more complex issues. But that wonāt happen of course. Too much money to be made and too many loudmouth morons bawling about freedom so everyone will say ah well nothing can possibly be done here, this will be gone off the news by the end of next week and nothing will happen until the next one happens and then repeat. Youād swear America was the only society in the world with social problems like inequality and racial disharmony the way some people go on or else saying well thereās more people murdered in developing countries so fuck it let everyone have guns and letās just get on with it.
It only weakens the argument when arguing with simpletons. Cultural and socioeconomic factors have far more to do with murder and crime rates rates than gun laws.
So just leave them as is because there are other factors? Of course there are other factors but this is the easiest one to fix. Difficult politically but easier to fix than rampant drug use, high unemployment amongst ethnic groups, etc.
what about these mass shootings, are there cultural socioeconomic factors behind these are is it some nut job with easy access to guns going on a spree?
Easiest one to fix? How the fuck do you propose getting 250 million guns out of circulation, including the great majority of semi automatic and automatic guns held by criminals?
I already said I am in favor of a complete ban on sales of semi-automatic / automatic weapons and whatever is necessary to get these weapons off the streets.
While incidents like Las Vegas obviously get all the publicity, the majority of mass killings in the US are related to domestic or family violence, so yes, cultural and socioeconomic factors.
Large scale killings, like Vegas, are clearly the work of psychopaths, and I agree limiting access to guns in general and a complete ban on semi/automatic weapons is part of the solution.
Thereās a pro gun headbanger on Newstalk now. Heās just dismissed yesterday as statistically incidental when you look at the numbers of gun ownership and then in the same breath said the LA riots of 30 years ago is one of the reasons to keep guns and now heās saying that if the teachers in Sandy Hook had guns then they wouldāve prevented the massacre. You canāt argue with these loons, they will never see the other side.
The main āculturalā factor involved is that much of the US embraces stupidity, is just fine with this type of mass shooting happening, and has an incredibly powerful lobby, led by the ruling political party, to ensure that nothing will ever change as regards gun control.
So, like many things regarding the US, thereās absolutely no point even discussing anything related to gun control, as much of its population cannot be reasoned with on the issue.
