The gun problem in America is pretty much unsolvable. Short of another civil war disarmament of US society is both unthinkable and impossible. The reality is assault rifles and other heavy weaponry arenât the problem, even if they get most of the attention. To seriously address this problem the State would have to dispossess the population of everything from automatic rifles to pistols. And that wonât happen.

Agreed. Gun ownership levels alone do not explain the amount of killings, countries like Finland, Switzerland & Canada have similar and higher levels of ownership. The real problem is the united states is full of absolute fucking head cases. The guns certainly donât help though.

Stricter controls on gun purchases wouldnât have a major effect on gun availability in the short run. The massive quantity of guns in circulation means that guns would still be relatively easy to get. It would have to be accompanied by dispossessions on a large scale. Doesnât seem plausible.

No, its much more complex than that, and while Iâm I favor of some restrictions on gun sales, it wonât solve the problem. As long as you have demented and mentally ill people in society they will find a way to kill people, including large numbers of people. Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and injured 684 and didnât use a gun, he used a bomb that a high school chemistry student could construct, and rented a van that anyone over 18 could rent.
The problem is #1 cultural. Look at the murder rates in the various parts of the world. Northern and western Europe is by far the lowest, around 1 person or less per 100,000 per year. US is about 4 per 100,000, South America 3X the US rate and Central America 10X the US rate. Obviously a big factor is that the US is an enormous market for recreational drugs and the countries that supply it or are in the supply chain have enormous numbers killed in turf wars. Itâs not just that though, human violence is just much more common in the Americas in general.
The biggest factor in US mass shootings specifically is mental illness, almost all the perpetrators suffer from mental illness and snapped. The lad in Sandy Hook was completely unhinged, locked away in his bedroom, his mother whom he lived with had no interaction with him for months other than pushing food under his door. The attitude towards mental illness in the US is appalling, feed kids antidepressants and just let adult nutcases wander freely. The latter is thanks to the cunt Reagan who cut off all federal funding of mental health institutions in 1980 (had done the same earlier in California). So, I would start by refunding mental health institutions and treating people who are insanely delusional. Have proper treatment for kids who are starting down that road (psychotherapy can work, drugs only mask the problem for a while). Wonât happen though in a country where its every man and woman for themselves. I would agree with a prior poster that its unsolvable, as there is no political or societal will to solve it.

The Feds nabbed Ammon Bundy and some of the dudes that were occupying the Malhuer Wildlife Refuge as the were driving back to the refuge from a meeting to establish âan alternate governmentâ in Grant County. At least one dead in shoot out with the cops. Reports of another shoot-out going on between police and armed miltants in Burns.
The remaining wack jobs at the Refuge have put the call out for other âPatriotsâ to come to their relief. Could be a real life shoot out by morning if some of the inbred gubmint-hatinâ white boys that reside in Oregon/Idaho/nevada start showing up.
