Armagh GAA Thread

Didn’t know there was a hurling team in Armagh.

Team to play Tyrone tomorrow

  1. McEvoy
  2. McConville
  3. Donaghy
  4. Murray
  5. Shields
  6. Moriarty
  7. McKeever

  10. Stefan Forker
  11. McKenna
  12. McVerry
  13. Clarke
  14. Caolan Rafferty
  15. Tony Kernan

Very strong Armagh side against a really inexperienced Tyrone side so I would be expecting Armagh to run out comfortable winners.

Strong team, presume Donaghy and Morgan are injured. Also not sure what the story is with Toner, whether he’s injured or not but he hasn’t featured this year, he might not be the most mobile but he does give a real fielding presence that the other midfielders don’t offer. Remains to be seen where Caolan Rafferty will be played, he could make a good target man in the full forward but he’s at his best further out the field. In my opinion he is Armagh’s best forward along with Dyas. I would have liked to see McParland start but the Cross boys are preferred. Clarke really needs to start delivering, Armagh did well last year in getting scores from all over the pitch but they really need Clarke to be scoring heavily this year.

Ciaran O’Hanlon isn’t in the squad either, he hit 6 points for Queens in the game on Wednesday night so presume he is being rested up after that as it went to extra time. He could be one to watch out for this year, made his debut as an 18 year old against Cavan in 2013 but opted out of the panel last year, a very talented young player.

Peter Carragher and Aaron Murnin had their first involvement for Armagh this season against Limerick.

Scorers were:

Tony Kernan 0-04
Mark Shields 1-01
Ethan Rafferty 0-01
Caolan Rafferty 0-01
Micael McKenna 0-05
Finnian Moriarty 0-01
Aidan Forker 1-01
Ciaran O’Hanlon 0-02

Apparently Micael McKenna ran the show, even if it is Limerick, impressive to chalk up 2-16 from play (of which 2-13 were from play?) without the likes of Campbell, Clarke and Dyas in attack. Very young team out there as well.

McKenna was very good.

Was it just Kernan on the frees?

I think so, Armagh got few frees up front.

Good stuff.

Armagh’s scoring stats from play since McGeeney joined the management team have been highly impressive.

Hopefully Armagh get flowing this year and take another AI. 1 Sam doesn’t reflect the pure commitment put in down the decades for the most urban rural county in Ireland.

Just read there that Andrew Murnin was a fellow Bob Radcliffe Cup winner with Lurgan Celtic.

Team for the game with Fermanagh on Sunday.

Armagh (NFL v Fermanagh) - Niall Geoghegan; Andy Mallon, Charlie Vernon, Michael Murray; James Morgan, Finnian Moriarty, Mark Shields; Ciaran McKeever, Aaron Findon; Tony Kernan, Miceal McKenna, Aidan Forker; Ethan Rafferty, Andrew Murnin, Jamie Clarke.

McKeever named at midfield but I’d imagine he’ll be playing a sweeper role with Ethan Rafferty dropping out to midfield. Strong looking bench with the likes of Campbell and Dyas back from injury and other options such as Caolan Rafferty, Brendan Donaghy and Harold.

How long has Vernon been situated at full back?

He’s never nailed a set position down with Armagh. He’s suffered badly with injuries and always been hawked around the back line, midfield and half forward line. Easily his best year for Armagh last year when he had a defined role and stayed clear of injuries.

Always appeared a gangly midfielder at best any time I saw him. Never would have seen him as a full back, especially not a McGeeney full back.

I would have had the same view before last year but he really made that spot his own.

He was full back in the championship last year, as far as I recall.

Correct.

First time seeing Armagh in the league this year, from the outset it was obvious they were the best team in the league by a wide margin and pretty much coasted through it in second gear. McGeeney has chopped and changed throughout the league campaign and tried out lots of new players and gave a lot of players runs in unusual positions. I was disappointed by the tackling today, very lazy and cynical and much removed from the discipline they showed in tackling last year, don’t think they will get away with it in the summer so will need to work with that. Also thought the full back line was far too loose in the first half and I think there may be a lack of depth there but when McKeever came in he cut the supply off completely.

The biggest positive for me was Murnin, he looks like the perfect foil for Clarke, his movement is terrific and he’s a big lad with great hands, powerful runner too. The real test will be when he takes on top full back lines but nonetheless an encouraging performance. Other good performers were Rafferty, McKeever, Clarke, Morgan and Dyas. No Soupy or Findon today either and they should be available for the Championship game. I’d take a stab that the team for the Ulster QF against Donegal/Tyrone will be:

  1. Geoghan
  2. Mallon
  3. Vernon
  4. Murray
  5. Morgan
  6. Donaghy
  7. McKeever
  8. Findon
  9. Rafferty
  10. Shields
  11. Dyas
  12. Forker
  13. Murnin
  14. Soupy
  15. Clarke

Would expect Campbell out round the middle of the field like last year and Shields at wing back with McKeever playing as the sweeper. Some really good options off the bench then in the likes of Rafferty, McKenna, Harold, O’Hanlon, Carragher, McVerry, Moriarty, McParland and Forker.
