“Team X are on the beach mentally.”
Used when a team with nothing to play for turns in abject performances in matches late in the season, ie. over the last two matches, it has been a case of “Everton are on the beach mentally”.
It also signifies that association footballers do not take any sort of holidays other than beach holidays.
You won’t hear anybody saying “Everton are backpacking around Argentina mentally” or “Everton are taking in the cultural sights of former Communist European countries mentally.”
Sometimes players are ‘by the pool already’, if they are not at the beach.

Go on give it a like. You know you want to
Not a cliche.
True, but there will always be a beach nearby to the pool, unless it’s Liverpool, where there aren’t many good beaches.
It’s all about options.
Football is a game of opinions.
Sarriball.
Perhaps my favourite genre of television football clichés.
“As the Cop 26 summit got underway in Glasgow, it was Norwich City who were worrying that their Premier League future would be unsustainable as a home defeat to Leeds kept them bottom of the table…”
“As Newcastle’s new Saudi owners received a rapturous reception at St James’s Park, it was the team who were committing atrocities on the pitch…”
“As Conservative MP David Amess was stabbed to death, it was Crystal Palace who were delivering a dagger to the heart of Manchester City’s title prospects at the Etihad…”
“As the Cumbre Vieja volcano erupted in the Canary Islands, it was a red hot Liverpool who were exploding at Old Trafford as they scorched Manchester United…”
“As a military coup overthrew Sudan’s democratically elected government, it was Steve Bruce who was being overthrown by the new Saudi regime at Newcastle…”

All good wingers have chalk on their boot
A lot of English footballers have never seen chalk in their lives.
