Aston Villa - early season form

Its ridiculous that downing is ahead of milner in the england squad never mind ashley young. Downing is rank.

I have seen McGeady play the majority of his Irish games. He has shown some promise but was absolutely rank in our last qualifying campaign. I have seen him play some fine games for Celtic and ones like against Man Utd where he cant get the better of John O’ Shea. Sometimes the excuses for him will eventually run out.

At the moment he is struggling to get in the Celtic team ahead of Maloney who couldnt make the Villa bench near the end.

How many gay porn films have you starred in? …

Im hardly a Gareth Barry apologist. I’m a big Ashley Young supporter and I have always rated Andy Reid.

im not saying your gay larry but i think you get my point

cool the jets

I wouldn’t have thought O’Shea vs McGeady was a key battle given United’s dominance of possession around the park. I’m not making any excuses for McGeady at all, who was quite productive with the limited ball he received. Strachan’s actually using squad rotation during this period of 12 games in 5 weeks, which is sensible enough with the games coming thick and fast. However, McGeady played at Old Trafford and I would expect him to play tomorrow night too.
The lack of prestige is surely an indictment of Aston Villa - hardly an argument to support their supposed superiority over Celtic. You’re supposed to be arguing for the merits of Villa, not protesting about how hard they have it.

The difference between the domestic tv reveune earned by the bottom club in the EPL versus the top club is about 20m - Derby earned 36m in tv revenue last year. The Premier League have paid the clubs outside the top 4 higher increments than those in the top 4 in order to level out the earnings - the increases went from 55% for the 20th club to 25% for the top earning club. Not sure how this supports the notion that the gap is widening.

One of the reasons you’ve fallen away is a lack of ambition to spend your money on ambitious signings - it’s not a shortfall of cash that Villa fans should complain about.

Again, the money is there - so why complain about how hard it is to break into the Top 4. If that is Villa’s aim then it’s defeatist to be talking about how the gap cannot be bridged. Arsenal aren’t outspending Aston Villa - they’re just a better run club.

Whatever about the mistakes made by DOL off the field, you’re overstating the progress made under MON to date. He’s brought about stability and progress from where ye finished in DOL’s last season but he’s achieved nothing yet.

Ah God here we go. Richie Foran was reasonable in the SPL. Noel Hunt was good after a slow start - cracking attitude that lad. Didn’t Roy Keane do ok in the EPL? Not sure what this obsession is about the Eircom League. Paul McGrath came from there did he not? Of course players are going to leave the Eircom League and do well, it’s just no more guaranteed in the SPL than it is anywhere else - look at the disaster under Stephen Kenny at Dunfermline as an example.

You didn’t see enough of him. A great Celtic player.

Clutching at straws there - Sutton must be a shit forward because the following dissimilar players are shit too. Rooney, Totti, Kaka, Ronaldo are all cracking forwards and all cracking midfielders. They prove nothing though.

No, you said he had SPL medals. I asked you how many he had. I know he has a league cup medal but his most amount of appearances in a season was 12 so not sure whether that got him a medal or not.

Yeah it was a good sign under Jansen. And they won the League Cup under Barnes/Dalglish - not the Cup.

You seemed excited enough about it the other week.

That’s my point exactly about John O’Shea. Does he make Manchester United crap because he’s won medals. It’s simple to pick on the odd individual but it doesn’t support the larger point.

You’ve seen Hearts once this year - bit of a rash judgement. They’ve gone seriously backwards in recent years though.

I have time for Strachan, just think he can be tactically naive sometimes, but more importantly there’s been a lack of fight in some big games like Barcelona away, Huns (away last season; home this season), United away that worries me.
I will respond to this tomorrow rock. i spent bout ten mins typing a response but it logged me out when i clicked send.

just put up a few bullet points

 1. Im not complaining about the lack of cash rock. However there is a limit to how much Randy Lerner is going to spend. Liverpool have been in 2 recent CL finals and generally go far in the competition. This generates shit loads of money firstly and secondly is a huge attraction for players.

Even if he wanted to and thank god he didnt MON would not have been able to attract Robbie Keane to the club this summer never mind how much he offered. Therefore that leads to a situation where the top 4 can literally cream off the top talent leaving the chasing pack like Villa to gamble on Young, Milner etc to develop into top players. That is my reasoning behind the top 4 actually growing further away from the rest.

 1. I think the gap can be breached. The trick is to be a consistent challenge to the big 4 not a one season wonder e.g. Leeds. MON imo is setting the correct foundations in place. He successfully fought of Liverpool for Barry this summer. He has sent a message loud and clear to the rest of the top 4 that be prepared for a war if they try the same with Young or Agbonlahor. We have serious money behind us but not in the same league as City, Utd, Chelsea. Our initial challenge should be imo to try and topple Liverpool.

 2. The EPL is still competitive outside the top 4. A lot of sides are roughly the same standard. The year after Everton made the Champions League they were fighting relegation. Tottenham came fifth two seasons in a row under Jol and looked in prime position to break the big 4. Yet they dropped alarmingly last season and face a long road back to that position. While games against Ajax are great I feel we should be concentrating solely on getting as close as possible to the big 4 this season. The UEFA cup is an unnecessary distraction.

4)A side that wins any league title with the following as regulars does not represent a strong league. v Hearts last week, wilson, mcmanus, caldwell, naylor, maloney, robson, hartley, sheridan, mcdonald, brown. As you have said every good side has a couple of shit players e.g. O’ Shea but anyone who think MON could be motivated to return to manage those is seriously deluded. MON spent 12m on James Milner during the summer. How much in total did Strachan have available to improve his squad?

 1. Best of luck tonight. I am expecting a far better performance that at OT. Utd will be resting players for the Arsenal game but Fergie hates Strachan so the boys who are on will be fired up anyway. I am hoping McGeady does well. This is supposed to be his stage after all.

I would love to see Aston Villa shit themselves in the Champions League.

So you would obviously love to see Aston Villa in the Champions League then Fran. Great

At the expense of Man Utd obviously

Very good first half from Villa in Prague , only fear is that after all there dominance they are only 1-0 up

Second half was rank tho Rintintin. Curtis Davies had an absolute nightmare of a game at centre half. Must have been beaten to about five headers and his awareness and positioning seems gone to pieces. Zat Knight was miles better and thats not saying much. Sidwell had a good game in midfield.

Lost 2-1 at home to Boro which is a disastrous result. Again I have to ask is the UEFA Cup worth being involved with. Looked from the highlights that we should have won the game pretty easily. Some absolutely shambolic individual errors cost us. Shorey tried clearing the ball with his middle leg for the first. Sidwell played a perfect ball to Tuncay for the second. In between Boro missed a shocker when Friedel again spilled a nothing shot. He is literally palming everything at the moment. I have not been impressed with him so far this season. I’d give Guzan the start on Saturday. He was outstanding in Prague. So calm and assured throughout.

Im going to the Emirates Saturday. Looking forward to us bursting Arsenal’s bubble. We badly need Luke Young and Carew fit. My team
Guzan
L Young - Laursen - Cuellar - Shorey
Milner - Reo Coker - Barry - Sidwell - Young
Carew

Looks as though Carew will be out KIB which is a massive loss if he is, Villa will need him to cause havoc in the shaky centre of defence that arsenal have, other than that you have the same team named as i`d like to see play.

KIB - I know you don’t seem to value the UEFA Cup anymore, something I can never understand with a club like Aston Villa. Always amazes me to see clubs toiling and struggling to get into Europe and then they just piss it all away to concentrate on the league again. When was the last time you were in the UEFA Cup?

Looking at your realistic aims for this season:

 1. top four position in the EPL - extremely unlikely
 2. UEFA Cup spot - worth aiming for and attainable but not an end in itself
 3. FA Cup - outdated, meaningless and irrelevant
 4. Carling Cup - utterly unimportant
 5. Winning or progressing in UEFA Cup - European prestige and credibility and new experience for newer fans

So it really comes down to qualifying for the UEFA Cup, trying to win the UEFA Cup and/or winning the FA Cup.

Don’t understand how achieving 6th in the league can be any more satisfying than a good UEFA Cup run. Each to their own though.

great result for the villa today…2-0 win at the emirates…Arsenal could be under pressure for 4th now…

Should have been four or five . Great result, great performance and a great finish from Gabby

I wasn’t expecting that result today but cracking result for Villa, especially on the back of a couple of defeats.

Good win, nice to see a middle of the road club like villa get a win over one of the big boys.

poor attempt Runt…Let it go!

Be prepared for a triumphalist match report later. What a game to be at.
