The dogs were being protective of her. More so than she was of them in fairness to the dogs. She shouldn’t have left them like that. Doesn’t matter how well trained they are if their master isn’t in command.

I have one. I’ve had 3 in all. Fabulous breed, loyal, intelligent, protective and gorgeous.
Our guy is with us 24/7 in the house and is part of the family. Great temperament and huge personality. He is very vocal it’s funny sometimes. So he is primarily a pet with guard dog duties. He looks and sounds the part so he ticks the boxes for me. I wouldn’t be happy with a killer yard dog.
They take a lot of time and socialising. I trained him but I sought training and instruction myself.
I have found a bitch to be more aggressive to strangers and extremely territorial. The dog can be more placid. If you have young kids, definitely them as a pup and teach the kids to respect them and you have no issues.
If you want a great guard dog get a bitch.
Good owner = good dog.

Not necessarily. The uncle is a vet and reckons those fighting dogs can be loving and caring for ten years, and then go ballistic for no particular reason. He said he’d never have one in the house nor near children.
I’m not sure that German shepherd are fighting dogs though, I think behe was talking about pit bulls and ridgebacks and the like.

Your uncle could have something in his theory. A 10 year old dog is in the twilight of its years and we can all go a bit quare at 70 :grinning:
Golden cockers can go barmy late in life, it’s a known ‘syndrome’.

Hips issue with your current & past dogs?

The last guy I had did develop hip trouble at the latter stages, at about 12 years old. Gave him supplements and glucosamine for it. He was on a painkiller a day for the last 12 months. He bowed out after 15 loyal years. Had him from 8 weeks old. :broken_heart:
Current guy is just gone 5, no issues thankfully.

Think it’s time.

Presume I’ll have no issues with 4 & 6 year old children with them?

You can never fully tell kid. Some greyhounds can be mouthy especially if the ears are pulled. They wouldn’t snap or anything, just a mouth around the hand. Full supervision with kids that young

They’re an amazing breed though

You are doing a good deed by the dog. Fair play. Your kids will love it.
You need to teach your small ones to give it space. A snap from a dog can be alarming at the least and painful at the worst. It’s a dogs way of communicating its discontent more than lashing out thru malice. Could turn a child off dogs forever which would be a pity. In time the dog will grow into your pack.
Learn to read the dogs posture and body language. Great sign of how the animal is feeling.
Good luck and enjoy.

What are greyhounds like as a pet?

Personally, I’ve never come across a cross Greyhound.

Years & years since I handled them though.

Met a few in the park recently, gents of dogs. Loyal to the core.

What age do they race from and to?

extremely easy, in every aspect, they’re mad for sleep, very gentle and don’t need much exercise or grooming. They don’t stink like hairy dogs and are basically like having a loyal cat.
