But Detective Inspector John Potter, from the homicide squad, said police had already searched that lane in the hours after Ms Meagher, an Irish national, was reported missing on Saturday.
“There’s two options, either police in the original search missed the bag or the bag has since been placed at that laneway after the police searched it originally,” he told ABC 774, where Ms Meagher worked as a member of the Local Radio Victoria team.
The handbag contained Ms Meagher’s credit card but not her mobile phone, which remains missing and is believed to have run out of battery or been turned off.
The police investigation has now turned to finding Ms Meagher’s missing phone, and to any potential links between her disappearance and other reported attempted abductions in the Brunswick area.
A number of women have reported being attacked or followed by a vehicle in the same area of Brunswick where Ms Meagher vanished after a night out on Sydney Road early on Saturday morning.
About 60 people also have contacted Crime Stoppers with potential information.
Inspector Potter said police would examine reports of assaults and attempted abductions made on a Facebook page, Help us find Jill Meagher, which had attracted more than 50,000 “likes” this morning.
In separate posts on the page, two women said they had felt threatened by a car following them in Brunswick in February. One said the incident was menacing.
In another post, a woman said a relative was walking home late one night several months ago when she “had someone try to pull her into a car” about four blocks away from Hope Street.
Another said she later moved from the area “because of similar incidents that happened to me”.
Some of the attacks mentioned on the Facebook page had not been reported to police, and he encouraged those victims to come forward.
“There has been quite a lot of dialogue, if you like, on the Facebook page set up to find Jillian and in particular women have been reporting possible or attempted or actual assaults in the area, so we will be looking at that as well,” he said.
“We would encourage people, if they have information that they think is pertinent, to ring Crime Stoppers. By all means use the Facebook page, but Crime Stoppers is the focus for us.”
Premier Ted Baillieu today sent his regards to Ms Meagher’s family and friends, and urged anyone with information to contact police.
“It is disturbing in many ways and my heart goes out to the husband and family. We trust and hope she is found successfully,” Mr Baillieu said.
“The sooner information is made available the sooner police can assess that and hopefully find her safe and well.”
Ms Meagher was initially believed to have left Bar Etiquette about 1.30am on Saturday, intending to make the short walk to her home in Lux Way, after refusing a colleague’s offer to accompany her home. Her home is less than one kilometre from the bar.
But she then made a brief phone call to her brother Michael at the family’s Perth home about 2am to inquire about the health of her father, who recently suffered a stroke, and police now say she may have stayed in the bar to make the call.
She was reported as missing by her husband Thomas about midday on Saturday.
Police said the lane her handbag was found in was off the normal route Ms Meagher would have taken home, but Hope Street was a street she may have used.
Ms Meagher is fair, 165 centimetres tall, of slim build, with long curly black hair and brown eyes. She was wearing a blue dress, black jacket, black patterned stockings and high heels.

I just saw the interview the husband did there.
He was very specific about what she had with her “just her bank card & her phone” he said she brought no purse out with her. Yet the bag turns up in the lane. :strokechin:

His reaction when the interviewer asked him was she going through a mid life crisis was very strange.

Great post Kev, but who are you really trying to convince here?
That soliloquy wouldnt be out of place with Claudius’s piece in Act3 of Hamlet but all this talk about rape ( Lebaneese gangs and your family members), knowing of hitting fellas with lump hammers while out mowing the lawn and fighting lately is a bit unsettling… WTB had better be fucking careful if Mac ever decides to press send, that’s all i can think.
